This episode broke just about everyone. The manga was able to be more explicit than the anime. Former ballerina gets pregnant, has to find a way to support herself and her child. She takes any job she can get, including prostitution. That's where we start her backstory, collecting the money after a client left. She takes money she can't afford to spend to buy the dress for her daughter. That money was likely a payment she was to make to the gang that took her daughter and left her for dead. She pursued but could not catch the vehicle they run her daughter in. Despondent and suffering severe blood loss, she ends it her way, dancing across the roof of a tall building with a final leap and plummets to the ground. Look again at that scene where she is dancing. That's not a lake, that's rain on a roof; behind her are the city lights. Just before she falls you can see the edge of the building. The first scene and the last scene are much more obvious in the manga. It's also fairly obvious, I think, that her daughter is no longer alive.
