Funfact. Kamina was dead after he got stabbed by that spear. He just came back temorarily out of sheer willpower to help Simon one last time and to tell him to believe in himself ("Believe in the Simon that believes in you"). You can see that because there are no life signals from Gurren when they combine to Gurren Lagann.

Once you realize that this is Simone's story, you realize Kamina's death was inevitable. In the Heroes Journey, it was a Kamina that issued Simone's "call to adventure." He is also the mentor figure who taught Simone how to be a hero. Unfortunately, eventually, the hero must learn to stand on his own.

When I watched this originally, the episodes were titled with their respective number. The title of this episode was only revealed at the very end which doubled the gut punch of that event. It sucks that seeing the episode title on the streaming service's UI kinda spoils it.

I was a little late to the party and watched it a few years back after hearing friends talk about it but this episode destroyed me. I’m an older brother and try my best at being supportive and backing my little bro, not as wild as Kamina does but I really resonated with his character and this had me shedding hella tears.

The lights in Kamina’s gunman that show his vitals are off, so he really did die but he came back to avenge himself because “A real man never dies, even when he's killed!"

The rollercoaster of emotions in this episode is amazing. Seeing people be annoyed at Simon to laughing at Kamina, to being shocked and worried for Kamina and then thinking he's dead. Then the cheer and happiness when they think he's alive to the awesome battle and then back down to the pits of grief realiing Kamina actually is dead. Then there is another level of shock and despair when you realise that Kamina died before the final fight, but came back just to help Simon.

Gurren Lagann starts off as an offbeat simple adventure story that follows a goofy cast of characters looking to break a system they're chained down by. I know a lot of people that stopped watching immediately after this episode's subversion of expectations. Gurren Lagann is a series of life lessons. It's a legend about overcoming anything, and everything. It lives in the spirit of each character, and outwardly, in Kamina. It's about never forgetting, moving forward, and owning up to the strongest emotions and becoming better than who you were just moments ago. I watched this episode shortly after losing my little sister, and I cried about it for days. Not because I loved Kamina(I do), but because he was trying to teach me something I didn't understand yet. The way the show plays out in the next few episodes was similar to how I felt back then, and seeing where this journey ends was so unbelievably amazing and cathartic and beautiful that I took this experience with me from then on, as I learned to progress forward, little by little, with each passing turn, breaking through life's obstacles to become the person that I believe myself to be. Because that's how a drill works.

This is such a beautiful series. It really, seriously, goes places. One thing I really gotta give credit to is the condition of Kamina's death. It wasn't a heroic sacrifice. It wasn't an epic duel gone wrong. It was a simple moment. This is war. The enemy saw an opportunity and took him out. It was quick, shocking, brutal and unexpected. And at the same time, leave it to Kamina to practically "come back from the dead" mid battle, avenge his own death and say a proper goodbye to his best buddy. This serious is just beautiful...and we're just getting started.

Man... GREAT conversation after EP08 ! I remember my own reaction back when EP08 finally aired for the 1st time... My jaw dropped through the floor into the basement. You guys NAILED it as well with all the points mentioned... Story-telling, soundtrack, character development etc etc. Really enjoyed your reactions. I think one of the biggest gut punches about kamina’s death is that if it weren’t for simon’s emotional breakdown Kamina would still be alive, he wouldn’t have rushed forwards into enemy lines to sort him out leaving himself open.
