Zaheer foreshadowed flying in the first episode - he taunts the guards of his prison with legends of Laghima “it is said he unlocked the secret of weightlessness, and spent his last 30 years without ever touching the ground” You’ll notice, when Ming Hua asks him “where’s P’li?”, the reminder of his attachment causes Zaheer to come back down from his floating 👀

Nah, that's bullsh*t. He had another tie and was his mission. You can see how deep is his tie when he doesn't want to run out of the Typhon without Korra, choosing mission over freedom. He's just a philosopher like Joker, one or two quotes and everyone loves them. Don't get me wrong, I like him, but he had the power of the script on his side.

The whole reason Zaheer was able to fly was because he literally let go of his "earthly tether" being P'Li. When she died, he had nothing left but to fully commit to his spirituality and that was how he unlocked Laghima's secret of weightlessness.

LOL, great call out on the Azula voice actor. She did such a great job to differentiate her voice for the character of Ming Hua; she slips just a bit here and you can totally hear Azula. Zaheer 's flight is tied to a heavy level of Buddhist belief; the more earthy ties you have the less your spirit is free to enter and conceive of the concept/realization of Nirvāṇa. By removing the self (dedication to freedom of the self) and leaving his earthy ties (P'Li) he's come closer to the void state of freedom, where nothing holds sway over one's self.

I think Zaheer chose not to give up the airbenders bc of two reasons. 1, he would still have leverage once he took care of Korra and 2, he wanted as little resistance as possible once he captured Korra

About the flying: you actually saw Aang doing it for a very, very brief moment too, in the Crossroads of Destiny. There, he let go of his earthly tether and rose in the Avatar State, without airbending. Then, he was shot full of lightning though

@@AserCentral since Ravaa can fly and the fact the avatar state is powered by spirits was probably a concept in the writers heads at the time it could be using spirit powers or maybe it's either severing your Earthly tether or strengthening it to the point of being able to stand on it and rise since so far only one method that works has been used but that doesn't mean severing your tether is the only way of flying

@@AserCentral I don’t remember how it looked exactly, but it was probably more of an avatar thing than an air bender who can fly. From my interpretation of what Aang was being taught for that last chakra is that he has to be able to let go of the things that tether him. So he has worldly attachments, but won’t let it cloud is decisions. For air benders who would fly, they would actually no longer have any sort of tether, not just the ability to let go. But that’s just my take from what I remember,please correct/add on to anything I said

Before you eventually ask about lavabending and before you are given a false answer, Bolin can't lavabend because he's a mixed child of fire/earth heritage that has never been confirmed. Lavabending is all earthbending. (Any non-earth lavabending we see before this was done in a past avatar state and is either a retcon or could be explained by an avatar being a lavabender at some point but I digress.) My personal theory is that Bolin is capable of lavabending because he is already a very unconventional style earth bender because of his pro bending training and go with the flow attitude. Most earthbender's are stubborn and head on (like toph) type of people. But Bolin was never really like that. Lavabending just seems to be a phase change similar to the way waterbenders bend ice, but it is not a natural change that earthbending traditionally allows for. As you have probably seen at this point as well, when Bolin lavabends he uses really fluid movements and does it in a very waterbending way.

You know, something that has always bothered me is shouldn't Lavabending be considered a form of Firebending & not Earthbending? Keep in mind, both Avatar Roku & Avatar Szeto (the Firebending Avatar before Yangchen) were shown bending lava from volcanos, yet here in Korra Lavabending is treated as part of Earthbending? I mean, Icebending is still considered a part of Waterbending, Oxygenbending is considered a part of Airbending, Lightningbending is considered a part of Firebending, Metalbending is considered a part of Earthbending, yet Lavabending is also considered a part of Earthbending.

Lava is liquid rock. I guess the liquid form of fire would be plasma. It's an interesting junction point between the two though. I wonder if lavabenders can only come about from a mixed heritage of fire nation and earth nation

I think its due to Lava technically just being VERY hot rocks essentially, it isn't actually fire, just burns to the touch like it. Kinda how waterbenders can also bend steam. Roku and Szeto being Avatars also gives them the ability to earthbend.

Because lava isn't fire, it is rock heated up, it is still earth, just hotter. To make lava, an earth bender heats up the earth by means of friction and makes the lava themselves, and Roku was able to bend it because he is an avatar, same with the other avatar.
