In case people are wondering, an empty unassembled 52 HP "can" goes for 75 quid, the 1U expander is 67. The in-case power supplies are 165, and 107 for the smaller one, and the power brick transformer is 41.5.
@Alter乂Aktywny Жыл бұрын
I am the The Can user for quite a long time ;) I really need to say, even if the "plastic is not sexy", when you fill your case with modules, it really strenghtens the construction - modules has fixed height, they weight themselves, and that makes it overall really solid :)) Also, there are project files of that plastic elements - so you can print your own version with 3D printer - with unique colour etc - which makes that system even more modular ;) Btw. What's cool it's you can buy pretty every element just as single piece (at start I've bought only few elements for my DIY case) and power solution itself is really top, and deserves an extra episode :)), and it really helps to save money for some modules, not to spend on start hundreds $$$ only on case, when you don't even know how much space will you need in future ;)

Man, what a neat thing this is!. Cool "side HP" trickery aside, it's about time someone finally made a truly modular case like this. It seems like such a simple proposition, but aside from some sketchy or fussy 3D-printed jobs, this is the first commercially available one I've seen that looks actually viable. I also really *really* like that the expansion connections are made via driving a bolt into a captive nut instead of threading the plastic directly. Unlike the power distribution board mounting posts, those are parts that will most likely be dis/re/assembled and moved around over and over again, so they've clearly given some consideration to longevity. It's such a small design decision that probably only minimally increases costs, but will add years of durability to the finished product.

One thing that I always find (literally) painful is trying to plug in the power for a module when swapping it out and then having to either cram my hand into a barely wide enough space or else remove a bunch of other modules just to plug in the power. It would be great if you could unscrew the back of it (or parts of the back) to plug a new module into the power buss. I suppose you could kind of do it by removing the top of the case...also modular depth would be great. Sometimes you need just a thin case, but then you get one module that won't fit and need to get a totally new case or bodge something together with standoffs or something. Moog angled 60hp case, I'm looking at you...

Portability is crucial, especially when using the system in a live setting outside the studio. I came across this case at Superbooth, and I was impressed by its design. Additionally, it's relatively lightweight. However, it falls short in terms of durability and solidity, and it's worth noting that modules placed on the side may be more vulnerable to the frequent impacts this equipment can endure during transportation, and you are still limited to placing those modules that you use the least, because it would not be the best to play with modules on the side.

I designed a 3D-printable, modular Eurorack rail system a while back over on Printables (CC License). This is a nice system but I fear it's still too expensive when compared to something like the Happy Endings. Buying multiple of these cans to make a larger case seems as or more expensive than a predesigned larger case (and it won't feel like a PC tower).
@mylarmelodies Жыл бұрын
Yeah defo it’s going to be more expensive than buying one big case might, but I suppose the point is you can do it in parts, and retain flexibility as you do it. Curious to see your system, please do link if poss!

@@mylarmelodies I have to agree that cost is going to make or break this system. It's understandable that the power supplies cost what they cost, but if they can get the price of the 3u & 1u cans and the passive buss expander boards down significantly, it just might work.

Side hp is cool but how do you actually protect the modules you put there on transport? The concept is very nice but without solid lid and side lids, it’s not really portable. Of course you can customize something but having 3 sides to protect makes the task quite more difficult. I hope they can come up with a solution for that, I cannot consider this case in the meantime.

Haha, I said loudly to myself in my own head '6U 104HP' is the 'right size'. Then you echo'd that :) The similar sized Intellijel cases with the 1U options are nice too, because of modules like the 1U uO_C, and the Ritual drive modules. Mantis is a good size as a studio option, but yes, a bit big for travel. I forced myself to be limited to one 6U Arturia Rackbrute. And it's definitely focused my thinking. If I need something else, it can be powerful pedals (Meris Polymoon, Chase Bliss Mood mk.II, UA Del-Verb ), and for sequencer, the compact Oxi One. Next year, I'll add an Empress Zoia Euroburo in it's own small sidecar case, because that will be me a lot of flexibility, to be a stereo wave folder into stereo filter, granular and a whole effects chain, and also some stochastic signals on it's CV outs. And I can also use all those pedals for my guitar, where the pedal format suits better than a big extra modular case. I prefer the sound of the best pedal FX to almost all the eurorack options. Apart from Strymon Magneto, which is lovely. I might move off Magneto into it's small case along with the Strymon I/O, so I can use it with my pedals for guitar too.

While it is a very cool concept, the price per HP for this case is much too expensive! For example, if a person wants the most inexpensive case to start a system in, the Behringer Go Cases are the best value cost per HP. Currently a 140HP x 6U (2 rows of 140HP) costs $229. Out of all the cases I have researched, this is the most bang for the buck, (or per HP) that I have found. It comes with a power system that has a lot of power. The only Con is you have to plan how you lay out your modules because the systems total power is divided into 3 zones and you can't exceed that power in any one zone or it won't power up. Modular Grid is an excellent tool to help you plan this layout.
@mylarmelodies Жыл бұрын
Yes this isn’t the cheapest way, nor is it billed as such. This is a far more flexible system than an off the shelf larger case and completely original - Behringer Go is a direct copy of the Tiptop Mantis (zoning system included), for me I would not choose to support that company but you must do whatever you feel is right. FYI the cheapest way would be to DIY a case - or to not bother at all and use VCV rack!
@jamesbtex Жыл бұрын
I disagree with one statement you made, that it's cheaper to DIY a case. I've been pricing the rails, distribution boards and power supplies and when you add up the cost of all these materials and the wood to make one, I wouldn't be able to make a 280HP system for less than $229. Nothing wrong with Behringer products. They are by far much cheaper than other companies and for me the less I spend on cases and some modules, the more I have to purchase other modules. I just wish I could find a more balanced power supply for Eurorack. Most all the ones I have looked at so far have a very unbalanced set of outputs, like the popular Mean Well RT-125B for example. It has plenty of current for the +12V Rated at 5Amps, but it falls short on the -12V at only 1Amp (Should be more like 3Amps), and they have a ridiculous +5V of 12Amps!!! Most Eurorack modules don't even use +5V! At most a +5V of 1 amp would be plenty.
@mylarmelodies Жыл бұрын
Behringer products are cheaper because they have copied successful concepts and designs from other (much smaller) companies rather than inventing new ones from scratch. Fair enough if it doesn’t bother you but it sure bothers me.

The major parts of “The Can” can be 3D printed. They should produce a file to print the big parts. Then they could focus on making the support parts that you can’t print. Very cool until I looked at the prices. $600 for a 7u/104hp makes the $300 Go still king for a basic case that's powered. HOWEVER....the modularity..and if you do it right...could make this much more affordable. I'd love to get one that's powered, toss bubbles on to power at least 2 more of the cases with long enough ribbons. I'm currently filling 2 Go's and looking at maybe a 3rd OR something like this. Still though to get the 104hp it costs as much as a Go and it's an unpowered case. Making a giant 6pack of these above 2 end stacks to make almost a bridge over my NiftyKeyz sounds really appealing though.

So there seams to be one issue. This dos not look very portable. Dose anyone here have a suggestion for a case that is nice to gig with?

FWIW I know Keith Fullerton Whitman uses these and travels with them - but yeah there are lots of briefcase style cases with that goal in mind - Intellijel, MDLR, Damaru spring to mind (I’ve owned the latter two)

@axeman2638 Жыл бұрын
side mounting is a really stupid idea, you then need a whole other case to put the case in instead of just a lid.

Side mounting is optional.

@@mylarmelodies the whole thing would still need to be put in a case to survive the rigors of the road I think, drag yours around to a years worth of gigs and do a follow up video showing how it's stood up.

They want 240 euro just for the “juice” and a power brick, I guess I am far too frugal to ever be a hipster.
