This is exactly the movement I did that brought on lower back pain which lead to sciatica but I didn’t realize sciatica was caused from the lower back so now it all makes sense. Thank you.

I didn't get Sciatica but a few weeks ago I bent over to pick something up and before I made it to pick it up my back cracked very loud. I went to the floor because my back went into spasm. When I tried to move to get up it would go into spasm again every time. It was sooo painful. The spasms lasted for over 5 days. I even had to have my Wife put my socks on for a couple days after because I would go into spasm if I tried to bend over. Ice and a very old Dr Ho's unit I already had for other pain issues years ago helped ( Like a TENS = Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.) After the spasms stopped (5 days later) my lower back was just sore all the time. I did the Stretches that I learned from Bob and Brad before I got out of bed and it helped. My Brother In-Law let me borrow his inversion table and it felt good when I was upside down. I do the exercises that Bob and Brad suggest and they work for me. I am 90% better now.

So, I had signed up for HIIT classes....and we had to do something similar to that. I have to say, when young, maybe it's not a noticeable issue, but as we age, my lower back now hurts! And with quick movement(as we have to do the exercise in a short time, fast pace) you can't have a really good form either. Even if the short term benefits are great...the long term-not so much.

I love squats and deads and I use to do it through the pain but I tell you even a normal body weight squat now flares up my sciatica so much that the pain is unbearable and burning which is why I switched to mainly machines for my Leg days mostly.... It's unfortunate but everyone is different and I totally. Agree with Bob and Brad.... You can do dumbbell rows Tho but with a supported chest pad like a Bench etc

This is a similar position to when vacuuming and bending to take washing out of the washing machine, opening a low drawer etc and in my experience (and others) it can bring on a back spasm. Especially if the back is already vulnerable due to sitting for long periods.

In the past couple weeks, I've abandoned all weights due to sciatic nerve pain. I've switched entirely to bodyweight exercises -- Pushups; TRX Rows, and Deep Sit Squats daily after a hike. Then light core in the afternoon before dinner. Even the lower intensity doesn't seem to help. Apparently this is a chronic condition that I'm just going to have to find some way to learn to deal with.

One legged rows with a knee on a bench shifts the pelvis to become uneven. Apparently doing rows this way puts you at risk of herniation a disc. It's better to do them with two legged.

Poor seated posture and properly extended spine, (during that rowing movement), are the exact opposites. It could actually take the strain OFF of discs being crushed while sitting. I get the warning re bad form, but leave it at that, please. _Fully_ extended, ("arched"), spine, (thus not actually bent over nearly as far), bent knees, , and a weight light enough to be lifted without jerking = no problem.

Will have to disagree just use light weights and brace your core(glutes hams scapula quads and lower back flexed with proper breathing technique) You teach how to relieve pain not to prevent it. Point taken though. Also shouldn't be 180 degrees, should look like your mid Romanian deadlift all the variations you gave compromise different body parts such as knees neck and well back. Doing it properly and knowing your limits is the best variation. It is a functional movement that everyone should be able to perform.

Proper Barbell row form consists of: 1. Hip hinge, 2. Neutral back 3. Strong brace You don't wait during your rows, if you aim for high reps, you should stand up and straight and take a another deep breathe to brace. The only time you shouldn't do barbell rows or similiar excercises if when you're: 1. (chronically) injured 2. old 3. have such low stamina that you can't hold your breath for 5 tot 10 seconds in order to brace

The only thing Bob and Brad are missing is proper core work during their exercises. Latest research (10 years +) shows that we should not advise arching the low back during ANY exercise because this is directly opposed to core activation. It’s the core (area between hip bones and pubic bone) that protects low back (with glutes too). Bent over rows with knees bent, hips back and torso at a 45 degree angle are better than 90 degree but only when core is engaged. Cheers!

Devin loves everyone I’m a physical therapist and hold an advanced degree in exercise science as well. I work with (repair) people every day who have ruined their backs with improper form during exercise, especially squats and heavy lifting, but also those who hurt themselves bending over and picking up a shoe!. An arched back essentially disengages the support structure needed to prevent the lumbar vertebrae from compressing and causing pinched nerves, QL dysfunction, SI joint problems and more. No arched backs! We need to teach strong core is the basis of all exercises and human movements. I also am a workout fiend so I know the difference and benefit first hand. All the best!

Jose Martinez yes and no. If you do them correctly it doesn't put nearly as much stress on the spine as they're saying, but most people don't. When you lift a lot, your body gets used to everything so every slight variable in your exercises can make a big difference to break through plateaus.

Not, if you bend your knees.

Gentlemen, I've been training free weight bent over rows for DECADES and have only gotten positive results from the exercise across all age ranges. To answer your earlier question regarding the target of the exercise, it challenges the upper back concentrically, eccentrically and isometrically while also correcting poor scapular mobility and postural positioning, insufficient core/abdominal stabilization and solidification, hip mobility and balance. Not only that but it strengthens the skeleton, lengthens the hamstrings, builds tons of strength and muscle right where its needed and burns calories like few other movements can. Seriously gents, you should remove this video. You're WAY off on this one and being irresponsible by influencing people away from this fantastic exercise.

@@bhavna123 I’ve stopped doing deadlifts and barbell rows because my sciatica is getting worse .At night while I’m sleeping the pain is really annoying. If you don’t want to stop lifting ,then you have to adapt your training ,you can build your legs with other exercises. In my opinion you have to stop doing deadlifts and barbell rows. When you’re doing squats don’t do the exercise in full range of motion.
