Where’s the prerequisites video to this? Your treatment of the E7 (“Oh! I’ll just use E mixolideaan flat 2 flat 6”.) Why of course! We’ll, astounding as it may seem, I didn’t know that! How do I know what mode to use? Maybe I should plan on a few years of prerequisite study before watching this video again. Anyhow. Thank you. I subscribed.

You would need to study some harmony in order to be able to choose a mode just by looking at the chart That song uses secondary dominants. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5-cqH5vZ9RpgM0 Having an idea of tonality, and being able to do some basic harmonic analisis would help you a lot to make good sounding choises.

For All of Me, how the heck do you decide to take the mixolyidan AND THEN flat the 2 and 6? I mean it sounds great, but how do you know to flat the 2 and 6. Mixolydian is just flat 7, right? (BTW, saw you on Cruise to the Edge a couple times. Loved your Jeff Beck tribute).

@@abramson98 when you see a dominant chord that pulls to a minor diatonic chord aka v/II V/III or V/VI that scale choice will work

It's a mode (5) of the harmonic minor scale built off the root of the chord you're headed for, ya?

@@marbinmusicYes, but E7 is not resolving to minor, it goes to another dominant chord, A7 (V/ii), no?

@ the ear is not a fortune teller. It hears the moment not the future. These modes setup expectations and the composer of the harmony has a choice of meeting those expectations or not. The term for not meeting those expectations is deceptive resolution

I think C major A harmonic minor Over E7 ...A mixo alter it . D Dorian .... I don't think In modes ,,,,,,,,,,,,well I was gonna say chord tones or scales. But scales are modes. I cant believe when I met you I was drunk and too shy to talk to you. I wish I had a do over. ...... BTW This is J.R. aka Korn Guy Bakersfield . Happy New Year .

This something I dont get: how do you construct "meaningful phrases" if you concentrate on playing notes from scales? It seems like randomly arranging letters and expect that a sentence emerges. And yet, interesting melodies and phrases usually are based from the notes of a certain scale. Do you develop your own vocabulary by selecting and re-using phrases that were initially just "random" notes from a scale?

I think the phrasing is the rhythm. Play a lick with a certain rhythm, and then repeat it
