Currently in farrier school and have been putting drill-tec and snow pads on horses. The school is in Idaho, so lots of snow. Drill-tec is similar to borium, but can be done with just the propane forge and a flux. Saves needing to braze. The con is it’s more expensive to purchase. We have also drilled and tapped shoes to add studs for traction. The term we have been told for traction is sharp shod.

Darn your gonna be so close to me and there is no way that I can get there to see you come in and finish. When my hubby gets home I am going to see if we can get my walker in the bach of the car so I can come up there. Would love to meet you and your only going to be a few miles away. Well I know your gonna do great. I will be praying that he watches over you and everyone on their journey you are gonna have a blast I will be here in Mesa rooting you on. Oh and it has been cold here too keep warm

I used to carriage drive & drove miles on the roads, year around. The traction from the borium, especially in winter or on wet roads was a huge aid for my pony. The packing & pad he uses helps take the shock out of the pounding of the hoof on the road. Also will protect the sole of the hoof from bruising if there are stones on the road. Depending on how many miles I drove the shoes would last 6-8 weeks, when the pony was ready for a trim. Often the shoes could be reset one more time, as the borium would protect the shoe itself from wearing down, but it would need a new layer of the borium put on. I drove year around & would have the pony go barefoot for about 8 weeks a couple of times a year, to let the feet grow out. When my farrier retired, the new one switched to studs placed into the shoes, easier to replace & he didn’t have to weld them on, they drilled holes & tapped them in. Pro’s & con’s to both methods, but both gave me a secure feeling driving.

I'm so excited for you and Blake to have this wonderful fun experience together 😃. I will definitely be praying 🙏 for all who are riding in the Pony Express. I know it's turning out to be a little more expensive than you figured, but it's truly an awesome experience. And I know how well you take care of your animals, but you're really going the extra mile to protect their feet, which is awesome as well. All that pounding can easily give your horse shin splints or worse, but I see you're doing everything you can to protect you and your 🐴. Can't wait to go along. Blessings 🙌 Jennifer

I’m impressed with the history of the Hashknife Pony Express. The shoes for the horses are very impressive, and I can see how they protect hooves. Being from Williams Arizona I knew most all of the members of the Bill Williams Mountain Men in the 60’s and 70’s. They would ride from Williams to Scottsdale for the rodeo. This pony express ride looks fun. With the way the weather has been I’d have a “duster” coat…

Hi there! Alan, it was odd to see you in a snowy place (we get Lots in Canada). And for some reason, I found it Very Funny that the very next shot was your hooded face bundled up inside the car! 😁 Fascinating video, thanks! I also follow Working Horses With Jim, a logging business in Maine. Big draft horses, using a very similar shoeing method for their work. Best of luck to you and Blake on your Express Ride! Subscribed to Jason :)

Had a mare that foundered, and I had to have the farrier shoe her pretty much the same way(pack, pads) minus the extra traction and clips. Cost a pretty penny, but those pads sure do a good job! I hope your ride is smooth and the sky sunny, it sure looks fun!

Those horse shoes are awesome. They may be pricey but well worth it. Much cheaper than vet or Dr bills that could acure without them. Praying for good weather & safe travels for your ride. Wish I could still ride. I used to be like Blake. I'd ride any of them. The last bronc I broke I was 34. It was rodeo all the way, just once with that one. He was a beaut. 16 hands at 3 yrs old. Sorrel 4 white stocking with a dimond on his forehead. Sold him to a cattle rancher. Back then horses were used for gathering heards. And getting loose cattle back in. Oh the stories I can tell of the good Ole days when I could still set a horse. Blessings to all. 😉 Thanks for sharing.

We "hot shoe" each time we reset shoes. It seals the end of the hoof wall as well as giving a uniform surface. I wouldn't keep those shoes on after the ride if you plan to do any lateral work on the horses. Enjoy the ride !

That was interesting. I have never seen the packing that he used before. Usually it is something else out of a double tube. Then my farrier will use copper nails that is suppose to aid in controlling bacteria. I have never used that on my horse but I have seen it used on other horses that is at the barn where I board. I can not remember what he does but it has something to do with pheasants, dogs and horses. He does that all year. The only thing I use is the heated shoe on my horse.
