“From what I can remember,” says Loïc Maschi, owner of this Fiat 850 Sport, “at 6 months old they gave me a toy car, and I fell for it, that was the beginning of it. I’ve always had a passion for cars and especially for vintage cars, I used to make reports on car shows, races…I couldn’t picture myself driving a modern car.”
“I fell in love with it, and I drove home with it,” he says of the first encounter with his brown classic car. But it wasn’t as easy as it seemed: the car needed a lot of work. You know, the type of work that requires a full restoration.
Loïc’s adventure is fascinating; friends, family, and newfound friends all helped push him to finish the work to complete the restoration, a restoration that went through several twists and turns as he found his own limits as an owner-enthusiast-mechanic.
The story of how this little car was finished in time to be shown at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance concours must have been spurred on by love: “…it’s my first car,” he says.
“I think you all know you can love your first car.”

My dad just 'confessed' a few weeks ago, that he actually owned one of these when they were around casually in Europe; and I just couldn't believe it! - Being born and raised in Bremen, Germany, I grew up on my moms pretzel window bug, our families first day Golf I (which some might know by the name 'Rabbit'), Audi 80s, Jettas, and our neighbors Audi Quattro Coupé (sadly none of the Group B streetcars, but still first edition). But my dad having had a piece of art like this was, and still is, so strange to me, having me see my dad from an all new angle. What I still do not understand is, even back when people did not understand the true value of these, why sell an item like this? This car is an unbelievable classic, an honest piece of italian art.

You're correct Loic, you should never sell this car. I'm a 64 year old from New Zealand and one of these beautiful little cars was my second car - it was white with tan interior. It is the one car of the many I've owned that I most regret selling as they're almost impossible to find now.

As usual, a passionate and beautiful video!! My first car was a pumpkin orange 1972 Fiat 850 Spider!! I thought I was the coolest 16 year old around with that "huge" 850cc powerhouse mounted in the rear which forced me to constantly downshift to gain power into any stiff wind over 10mph!! 8-track between the two seats... Deadhead sticker on the back!! Great times to be alive!! I might have been 145 lbs soaking wet in high school, but I could actually lift the front wheels off the ground which was very useful and comical when I would lift the front end out of a snow bank that I just slid into!! My "Fix It Again Tony" will remain in my heart forever!!

I think that many people can not imagine that such a small sports car can make a lot of fun. It does not always have to be a sports car with a lot of horsepower and expensive in terms of purchase and maintenance. Fiat has proved his time that it is also different. I was fortunate that I worked in a time as a body builder, in which Fiat built these wonderful vehicles. Also the 850 Limosiene was even family-friendly. Today we wonder that such a small vehicle should be family-friendly. This is due to our demands, which are growing ever higher and the reasonable vehicles do not give a future. At that time it was different than the 850 sports and limosiums were built, most were glad to have a car at all, even if it was small. My friend, an Italian, who worked in a small workshop near Frankfurt am Main, went to Italy, father, mother and two children every year in the summer holidays. With a Fiat 500 !!!!! Across the Alps. And they were not the only ones to drive such large distances with small vehicles. The so-called guest workers have done this, more or less every year. The guest workers have long been ordinary citizens, even if they have a different passport, they belong to Germany and have often become very dear friends. I know my friend today, we have learned together and the Fiat has been waiting and repaired. Sometimes we talk about the time that has been back a long time (I am 65 years old, my boyfriend is slightly younger) even we can sometimes not believe the small car like the 850 Sport was a dream of ours ...... He has earned his place in the automobile history of Italy and Germany. I would like to drive over the Alps again with such a car to find out how the feeling is, if it is not quite as fast as today, but more beautiful, I guess.

When I was a kid, my father bought a used red 1969 850 Coupe when we lived in Omaha, Nebraska. He tried to drive to Chicago in 1972 and the car had an electrical problem and caught on fire and burned to the ground on the interstate. He came back home on a Greyhound bus. That was his Fiat adventure. It really is a nice looking car when it's not burning.

for those who have seen the Pinchcliffe Grand prix. this is the actual car that gave the sound of the Il Tempo Gigante. it was a Fiat 850 Sport Coupe with an almost completely broken Abarth exhaust . they directed the rear end of the car into a "tin barrel" added a few layers of sound on top and thats it. but this car's engine was the base of it. there is NOWHERE written on the internet about this. i just heard it mentioned in an old tv show about the movie.. useless info but still, kinda neat to know

An old friend of mine and I used to have this conversation regularly. He was a huge fan of the Fiat 124 Spyder and drove his to work daily. His viewpoint was that you just had to give it regular care and maintenance and it would be as reliable as most others. I have to acknowledge that his did perform much more reliably that the usual Fiat that I had seen at that time. He said you had to have "the proper state of mind" to enjoy a Fiat... I asked, "What is that, insanity???" He made a rude gesture and laughed at me!! ;^)

Sold it and to this day I regret it because of what I could have learned fixing it.

And it's unjust to call what Petrolicios makes "videos", these are real mini films :) What a passion this guy has, of course he can't sell it. I would had kept my first car as long as I could too if I hadn't crush it :( And it was just a FIAT Bravo, not nearly as cool as that 850 Sport.

Loved this video. I also got into cars at a really young age and have a passion for older vintage cars as well. I love new cars, but they all just miss something I feel older cars have - character and the history and stories behind all those miles. At 22 I have a 1974 Datsun 260z and after I graduate this year from college I'd really like to find another classic car pre 1980 for a daily driver

I remember that Fiat 850 Sport, my uncle was owning a white one. I still feel the smell of the seats, the sound of the engine getting the right temperature from cold mornings and his way of turning the steering wheel... :-) PS: 2 Loïc Maschi - I have a friend of my car club who's into Vintage Fiat (he has a restoring garage..) feel free to pop me up about any tips/suggestion about your lovely vintage - That's only for a sharing passion..All the best 2 you!
