Pro Tip - When using desolder braid fold the end few millimetres back to form a two thickness or three thickness square pad that works much better at cleaning solder and also keeps the iron from contacting or snagging any solder pads and is more economical in braid used in the long run.

It did the job, but watching you simply wipe away those pads with the braid makes me think I was doing everything wrong.

When I used it for wires and some pcb work it wasn't bad. It didn't leave much visible residue. In the tin it looks, feels, and smells like Vaseline, its just a mildly different color. Also with Vaseline being so unreactive it might be fine to leave on the board. High end overclockers smother Vaseline on their motherboards for liquid N2 cooling to protect from condensation.

Interesting, might try it some time as I haven't been able to find decent cheap flux on Ali or Ebay. Does anybody know where, if at all, I can find the chemical composition? I just want to know whether it contains something highly toxic more than, you know, leaded solder and common soldering consumables. Of course, ingesting or inhaling flux is obviously harmful, I'm just always wary of random chinese chemicals as one should which could also potentially cause damage to solder masks or the PCB over time.
@nanofixca9 күн бұрын
Definitely fair! I'm not so concerned about PCB damage since it cleans off so easily. Plus, I hate flux residue so I always clean boards as much as possible while/after working on them. As for the chemical make-up, I'm also pretty interested. I just emailed Mechanic directly to try to get a data sheet, MSDS, or at least some information on it. I'll keep you posted 👍🏻

Do you know what is in that flux? Why would you inhale anything from aliexpress? Does it even have a credible safety datasheet?
@nanofixca10 күн бұрын
I don't plan on purposely inhaling any flux fumes tbh. Not good for you no matter what flux you get 😂 That's why we have fume extractors!
@wombatillo10 күн бұрын
@@nanofixca It's not about purposely inhaling them or not. In the end you have no idea what's in the Chinese flux and some fume aerosols always escape to mix with the ambient air unless you're soldering inside a fume extractor hood or you have a localized fume extractor practically above the soldering location. I see from one of your videos that you have 5 inch (?) open ventilation pipe above your station but that is too far from the solder melt zone to effectively capture the aerosols. It's great that you have ventilation in the general vicinity of the workstation but if you're going to do this for hours each day and for years as a profession I strongly urge you to get proper fume extraction and filtration if exhausting to outside air is not an option. Stay safe.
@nanofixca10 күн бұрын
@@wombatillo I appreciate your concern and advice my friend! You are not wrong. Since I've recently been doing repairs daily, I am shopping around for a better fume extractor. The problem with buying flux in bulk, as you seem to do, is that flux has an expiration date (that they almost never list), typically around a year or so after it was manufactured. And flux works like garbage after that, if it works at all. Given you said you had 20 tubes of your old flux, I don't really see any way you'd be able to use it all up before it expired. Unless you do a few hours of soldering every day, you probably shouldn't buy more than 2-3 tubes at a time.
@nanofixca10 күн бұрын
I'm aware of this! I only got 3 more tubes of this new stuff, but I do go through flux relatively fast these days. The only reason I had 20 tubes of the old stuff (I only have 7 left actually and will be throwing it all away) is because it came in a large pack and was dirt cheap. I'm aware that flux expires and it was basically the worst flux I could've bought, hence why I'm looking for new flux :) I was just focused on buying other tools in the last year because it was working fine for me tbh.
@4otko9996 күн бұрын
looks really nice, but from what i'm seeing kinda expensive. 559 knockoffs go for $1.6 a pop (what buy), but this stuff is $5.3 (price of 3+ syringes of 559). wish it was cheaper

@lovedeathhatepoison87379 күн бұрын
one thing to note is that any good flux should be acidic and acidity brings in resistance and without a acid flux you can't remove oxidized layer from solder pads so the test of no resistance tells us that it is going to be very shitty where it counts and also these acid flux becomes OL once they are activated by heating them
@nanofixca8 күн бұрын
This is very good to know! Someone else pointed out that I didn't measure resistance after heating them which was my mistake. Although I'm not too worried about my flux dealing with oxidized pads, as I find that a little heat and alcohol takes care of those. But maybe that's just because I've never used good flux :P
