Another good exercise for fretboard visualisation is Rick Beato's optical illusion scales. Play an ascending major scale but only 2 notes per string, so your hand has to slide down a position each string change. Really weird but cool exercise

I've got to thank you for your very to the point and informative content. I'm a new guitarist with cerebral palsy and its been a struggle every step of the way fighting with my disability. But I'm getting to the point where I can somewhat control it and I've been really looking for ways to get the most out of my practice time and out of all the channels on youtube, yours is by far the best in terms of pure information.

@@ryanlee2546Nah, weve all got hurderls to overcome. I pursue it for the love of music and nothing else. But if I can inspire people to pursue it then I guess Ill take the complement. Dont let what you think you can achieve hold you back from what what you can actually achieve. I let that hold me back for the longest time. "I cant play guitar, My disabillty will never let me." But god damn it I refuse to let that thinking hold me back anymore. I doubt Ill ever be a fast shredder but I can still create music. Music that I can be proud of. Anyways I've had a few drinks and Im just rambling at this point. If any one wants to do something, do it, you'll be surprised what simple grit and determination will lead you too.

Reminds me of the "Where there is a will there is an A" (college focus motivator lectures) ...one thing that always stuck with me was Practice does not make you better...[you could practice the wrong thing a million times and it will still be wrong.] Perfect practice makes you better. Whatever you do aim for perfection slowly. Once you have perfected your goal you only review and your study time is reduced to half. Great vid! Im not sold on the faster playing though...it does sound cool and it is fun to play but for me its all about that one slow note that you can make anyones heart cry and yes it may come inbetween many fast notes. But i digress...great vid! 🤘😔🎸

recording or video recording the session is a good idea to watch or listen afterwards. then, like after a year of practicing you can see and hear how it was when you started

When I first started playing. I didn't stop for a year 🤣 I loved it, and when I dropped school. I played all night every night. I got about 16 hours per day. I'm lucky to get 16 minute intervals now. And that's with the acustic. I still play everyday and always will.

This is a fantastic approach and it certainly applies to learning quite alot of different skills, not just guitar! Particularly the aspect about work and putting in ridiculous hours vs enjoying it. I'm a shit guitar player to be fair but its something I've started to notice both with guitar and other hobbies. Enjoyment in combination with setting concrete goals for practice based on your analysis of recent results is a surefire way to learn things quickly.

Petrucci gave a nice lecture on practice, and he said it is overrated the way people are doing it and they waste more time on inconsequential BS rather than moving on to the important part, putting the lessons and techniques into a song.

Excellent video! To be honest, even if the route to getting better was just playing up and down scales endlessly I'd do it, I just love this instrument!

I don't completely agree with Steve Vai. Actually, when you are starting to play guitar, many times you really have to force yourself to practice some boring patterns at very low speed, until you start noticing gains. Even Paul Gilbert said that was the case for him when he started.

My approach to learning guitar has always been to practise licks and riffs from various songs, with a range of techniques, at a level I'm comfortable with. This really is all you need to do to get good. Playing scales up and down is soul destroying. Start with easy stuff e.g. Crazy Train riff. Once you can play level 1 riffs like this, move onto level 2 riffs. Keep doing this until you can play songs like Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement.

I find if I pick a key to just jam in and include modal chords that I benefit greatly. I play the same thing with chord inversions because it can take on a different characteristic or tone.

Steve Vai couldn't alternate pick he didn't think he would ever be able to do it that coming from someone like Steve Vai is huge because he's obviously mastered Alternate picking and he's a phenomenal guitaist it's not talent that separates us from pro Guitar players like Steve Vai our Joe satriani or Slash etc. It's dedication for the instrument willingness to practice for hours upon hours talent is a made up word some people may catch on faster than others maybe people with an ear for music or someone that has natural rhythm but it's nothing everyone can't develop talent just discourages people that means nothing no such thing anyone can play guitar and be great at it it's all up to you how hard your willing to work for it your level of obsession.

Then you must already be a master, an expert? Watch great players and try to mimic them...plenty of things to work on....start with what music interests you now. For me, it became learning some jazz a couple years ago...at least the incredible chords they use..... I''m 60...playing (sucking) since 9 years old....thank God for KZbin!!

Most guitar Gods practice in front of the TV. You can practice scales, or a lick, sweeps, or whatever for a couple hours straight without even thinking about it. Of course, anyone you are watching TV with might want to stab you in the neck with a fork.

Being a better guitarist can happen instantly if the guitar you're playing is perfect. I stand by that statement. The RTG42 Ibanez you're playing is NOT perfect.
