Collecting, listening to music is not a hobby, it's a lifestyle!

You gotta go with what works for you... For me, music is a lifestyle (a big part of my life), but searching for various pressings, etc., is the hobby. If all my records disappeared, I would still have the music (just stream it, or something). I fully appreciate others see things differently, and I think that's great. Our differences make us more interesting.

Some people can’t afford expensive record players. I couldn’t nowadays. Luckily I have my old Yamaha from the 80’s still. People get too jacked up over all that stuff. Just put on the damn record and enjoy it on whatever you can afford.

Agree with your comment about us record fans, for example I don’t necessarily have the same music taste as yourself but that doesn’t stop me from really enjoying your videos every week. Plus I learn about other genres of music and it’s always good to try to broaden your tastes a little from time to time ! Cheers Frank ! 👍🙏

My Dad bought me an all in one player in August ‘23 and recognise that it isn’t the best player but I have done things to make it as good as it can be. I have attached some Harmon kardon speakers, changed the stylus to a diamond tip and placed a stick on weight on the back of the tone arm. I also keep my records clean and store them correctly. As an entry level player, it’s done the job and will always have a sentimental value. I plan to buy an audio technica later this year when I’ve saved the cash to do so …

Great video, Frank! First of all, I love the term “Frugophile”. I think that would be a great T-shirt. I would put myself in that category as I've spent a fraction of what most true audiophiles have spent on their systems but, I enjoy tweaking, and adjusting what I have to make it sound optimal. As for the Crosley conversation, many years ago I had a few hundred records. The introduction of CDs took me in a new direction and my records were donated to Goodwill. Three or so years ago my wife and son bought a suitcase type player and an Amy Winehouse album. Listening to about 15 minutes of that record reminded me of the depth that you can get from vinyl and rekindled my love for the hobby. Thanks for including everyone who loves music, no matter what they listen to or how they listen.

The all in one suitcase record player is what we had in the 50s and 60s. We could play 78s 45s 33 1/3. There were carry cases for the 45s, which the rich kids would have full of records. Instant party when someone brought one to listen to records after school.

Great video man! I often say the same thing regarding the all in one, starter players - Crosley etc. I kind of despise when people talk badly about them and make people who might have one, feel like they are doing something wrong. It is my view that if this is something that gets someone into record collecting and discovering the wonder in records, I think it is absolutely perfect. Yes, they are not good players, but as you said they serve a purpose, and I honestly thing it is quite a noble purpose. I think that if the younger generation doesn't discover the joy of collecting records, and the excitement of discovering music through crate digging, once we are all dead, all of our records will end up in a landfill, lost to time. I think that would be a very bad thing.

I'm in my late 50s, and our 70s Crosleys was mono record 'players.' One I remember having at around 10 years old was a small Panasonic that I played my 45s on. I loved that player. Without that experience, I probably wouldn't have gotten into the 'stereo' of it all in my teen years and beyond.

On the topic of all in ones: I have my serious stereo in my den, where I keep all my truly valuable records (along with my first edition, leather-bound books on mahogany shelves, of course) But I also have a thing for cheap, questionable records I find at Value Village, or for that matter, the dump… So I got myself a little Victrola at Walmart. It’s perfect for those scratchy old ragtime collections or whatever K-Tel masterpiece I’ve managed to unearth.

The first record player I had in the late 70's was probably worse than the modern equivalent; and that is exactly how I got into collecting vinyl. I was a 1970's 80's teen, even then, Hardcore audiophiles were the butt of jokes among me and many of my friends and acquaintances. especially when I saw those pricy Mobil Fidelity releases of "Dark Side Of The Moon, Sgt Pepper, ect which I remember seeing at record stores, thinking, at the time. I would never pay that much for that. The joke became even stronger, by decades end when word of an all new digital Compact Disc format was coming and would make every Tom, Dick, & Harry a "default Audiophile". although lately I learned the early Mobil Fidelity vinyl records I saw when new, are now considered highly beloved grails today.

My daughter started with a Crosley, and no, it wasn’t the best. But it did kick start her passion, and she now has a Fluance RT80 with a pair of Edifier speakers, and will upgrade to separate amp and speakers when she moves in to her new place. Not everyone has the budget and space for better, but bashing what they’ve got will only discourage them. And Crosleys don’t damage your records anywhere near as much as is claimed!

Audiophile defined is a word that means "One who will willingly spend far too much for a preamp that looks good but doesn't support its price with continued value over time." Collecting records and enjoying music is something to do for those who enjoy doing it. I enjoy Jethro Tull, I have all their albums on CD, I am in the process of collecting all their titles on vinyl. Alongside that, I am also collecting the remix box sets of their specific albums for the included 5.1 mixes. Why, because I can't get enough of Tull's music. Another aspect of record collecting is finding a good copy of an artists first album from 1968, is like a sports fan getting a baseball signed by Lou Gerhrig or Babe Ruth. It holds a meaning for this person.

I prefer good average-joe stereo equipment with professional quality turntables. I myself haven't had a very good opinion of Crosley record players, including their sudo professional turntables. But, I have found some very good Crosley products. You know, Crosley follows trends. Not all Crosley products are junk. Crosley is not a manufacturer, it is a marketing company. It tells manufacturing companies what they want and those companies make them for Crosley and a bunch of other companies also. My first Crosley product was the WR-18 table top CD/FM radio in a Wurlitzer 1015 style jukebox. It even has real bubbler tubes. The original, like mine, says Wurlitzer on it and not Crosley. Later they removed the Wurlitzer name off of it. Close to 20 years old and it still works great! I bought a retro-looking 50's, 60's-ish looking FM radio which other sources can play through it and it can function as a Bluetooth speaker. It works great! Having missed out on previous Beatles record players, I decided to take a chance on the "Let It Be" version while it was still available. Atleast this vintage of Crosley uses AT magnetic cartridges. I have opened the box and inspected it, but haven't played it. Maybe tomorrow. My latest Crosley purchase was a mini retro refrigerator to keep my sodas and beer cold. It doesn't and doesn't need to make ice. It works great. I found out about it on KZbin from an appliance repair guy who takes them apart to see how they are made. He gave the Crosley a favorable review. The Crosley is quite good and is better than other mini-refrigerators costing a lot more. Crosley products are often better than they used to be.

The problem with Crosleys is that people play records on them and then when those records go on the used market we have to deal with the damage they caused, which may be initially undetectable. OTOH that also applies to any record where the previous owner had no idea how to set up a turntable of any kind. But the worst are the records that have been Crosleyed. That’s all there is to it. These are just simple declarative sentences, no judgement implied. ;^)

Love the video! I also really like people who say you can't enjoy or love a band/hobby/whatever if you have critical opinions. That's ridiculous! In fact, to really engage with something you're interested in MEANS that you want to spend your time thinking about it and the ways it could be even better. I also really enjoyed Beef, thought the ending was quite beautiful.

I’ve always said that everything that’s been said about Crosleys and all in ones that have the same BSR mechanism in them is because of two different camps in the vinyl community: vinyl snobs; and those that are trying to tell newbies in the vinyl hobby not to get one because there are better options out there. It may be convenient if you’re just starting out to get one of these, especially the all in ones. But you’re doing yourself a great disservice if you listen to these and think this is as good as it gets in vinyl playback. But I’m 100% with you, Frank, in saying that these serve a purpose. They’re perfect for a child’s first record player. They’re easy to use (as the video with your daughter shows), they come in several cool colors, and they’re not overly expensive. I say SHAME to anyone and everyone who would try to make a child feel guilty for having one just because THEY don’t like them!!! “Audiophile” has become a catchphrase for certain vinyl listeners, and not necessarily a positive one, either. This is where the vinyl snobs really come out in force. It all just boils down to “quien es mas macho” and really nothing else. I consider myself an audiophile in that good sound means something to me. I’ve had my setup for several years now, and though it’s quite modest, I think it sounds good. I don’t feel the need to upgrade or have the latest and the greatest in what’s out there. What I have suits me fine. I let the audiophile game players spend their money on the most expensive setup they can find while I spend my money on records!!! Keep on spinning, Frank!!!

The collection of music particularly vinyl is the hobby side of it with listening feeding into the lifestyle aspect. Obviously there is significant overlap. What I have noticed since the resurgence of vinyl is that there is more of a sense of community this time around. Probably many reasons for this, the many U Tube Channels such as Channel 33 where you can share information, generate discussion and educate particularly a whole new generation of enthusiasts. Mediums of this type obviously weren't around in the 60's,70's and 80's. Independent record stores are now meeting places not just retail outlets. You have in store performances, by artists. Here in Sydney one store regularly puts on a BBQ and Record Fairs are on all the time, again another community event. The one cloud on the horizon is the rise in the price of vinyl.

I once knew an audiophile who invested outrageous amounts of money in his system. I think the components he had probably added up to around $50,000, in 1980 dollars! The system sounded spectacular, for sure. But I would never invest that much money in it even if I could afford it.

My friend asked me about help with getting a Turntable. I recommended a Audio Technica LP60XBT and a pair of speakers to Bluetooth with as I knew he was limited with funds. I recommended the 52 Watt speakers instead of the Amazon deal with 24 watts only. I've heard it playing and he's very happy with it. He is not bothered about Hifi Quality and just wanted to play his records from 40 plus years ago. He's even purchased a cleaning kit too.

A friend of mine picked up a Crosley (or whatever brand it was) and i was impressed by it. Mostly because of the pitch controller on it. Because i like playing my 45's at 33. But sometimes it sounds more ugly and satanic at 37 rpm. Or maybe even 28 rpm. Depends on which way ya got to fine tune it to bring out its beauty. I still remember that day I ran into you walking down the street. That was just so weird. Never had something like that happen. Just surprised I never ran into you at other places I have been to while I lived there. Then again, i was living out on the far westsiiiiiiide of the city.

Some of the regular Crosley players are apparently very solid players for an affordable price. They sound like very interesting options for anyone wanting to get into vinyl. The suitcase models do look more like decorative pieces and not like serious record players though. And what I read about the quality of those players isn't good. With regard to the high prices of records: isn't everyone complaining about that by now? I can't imagine that being a controversial subject.

Hey Frank, another great video, as usual! I have to agree with your answer to the "true fan" question. To love something unconditionally but feel like you can't have issue with some aspect of it is ridiculous. That's like some of the more "patriotic" people down here in the States insisting that you cannot question the government of the country you love. Indeed, I think it shows that you love something MORE if you find fault with it, and that you care enough about it to express concern over something you think is wrong with it. Anyway, point made. Cheers!

Buy a Crosley if you want to but just understand that you may as well play low quality mp3s because you're not going to hear the quality in the records you've payed good money for through a Crosley. Its kind of like buying a sports car then putting cheap tyres on it and driving it on bad roads

I have people ask me all the time which turntable they should buy, speakers, etc. I always tell them to start with a realistic budget and then start shopping. If they buy a Crosley, good for them. It took me years to build my stereo system. And, I'm willing to bet the majority of us started out with your average "all in one" stereo system. Just have fun with this hobby. That's my only rule.

Suitcase players damage records. If you're playing dollar bin stuff of 45s, they're fine. I just heard a store owner warn an owner that they often skip and advised them to put a coin on the headshell. Crosley was selling a rebadged decent unit (Project)? That would be fine.

I have over 500 records. Do I call myself a collector? Nope. I just love the music, I just prefer the vinyl medium for it but I'm not exclusive and I'm also "best value" oriented. Should I buy that record that is quite expensive or settle for the SACD that is $30, I own a SACD player so this is no brainer. Also, some of the artists I'm into sometimes release an album and on CD you have more tracks than the vinyl (go figure, but I guess it would be a 3-4 records set and they want to keep the price down). I'm buying the CD because the more music or just knowing you have the "complete" album not an "abridged" version is more important to me. So, yes I have a lot of records but no, I'm not a collector in the sense "I want to collect records". I could be a collector in the sense of music collector. Yeah I prefer that. PS: yes, price and value matter and yes, if I'm a fan of a band but I don't like one/more of their albums, I won't buy it.

Crosley record players are equal to the record players we had in the 60s. My records from that time still sound good. Nuff said
@myleftthumb2294

The only STRONG caveat I would give on the all-in-one players is to make sure you're using a diamond stylus and NOT a sapphire. Some of the really cheap ones come with the sapphire and it just wears out too quickly before novices realize it and then their records get damaged. These players can usually be upgraded from sapphire to diamond for a modest amount. Granted, they're probably going to be bonded conical styli which is still sonically inferior, especially coming from most likely a ceramic cartridge, but at least the grooves will be preserved.

Decent advice. Here's a nomenclature lesson. Crosley's are portable phonographs, not all-in-ones. All in one would be a combo unit, usually radio/tape/phono.

@@wintersbattleofbands1144 Yep. My first and only one was an Emerson unit circa 1974. I can nail the year down because they were using ELO's Eldorado as the demo record and me and my dad were sold! That served me well for about six years upon which I repaired my dad's old Bogen tube amp and bought a Technics SL-D202 turntable to go with it.
