Except that prestigious private universities these days give you a full ride with free housing. Getting in is the challenge, but if you manage to get in, you get out of the school with a better prestige, a much bigger network (if you want to work in consulting firms on Wall St., etc, networking absolutely matters), and less money spent than going to CC. But for most people who can't get into these schools with a need-based full scholarship, yes, going to CC and transferring is better than paying it in full. For example, if your parents make 200K (yes, that's 200K, not 20K) or less, you will get full tuition and housing support from the school at no cost. You'll even get your food covered.

IQ testing kids is hilariously inaccurate. There are several different types of questions on IQ tests and if a kid hasn't effectively learned the process for one or more of them yet it can tank their whole test and you get a completely inaccurate number from them. On the other side of it, many kids who actually aren't very intelligent but are good at memorizing processes for things score significantly higher than they are expected to and then spend the rest of their school days failing to display the same intellect as the students who only got bogged down by one thing and scored low. Kids with ADD/ADHD and autism test ALL OVER THE PLACE and you can't reasonably get a score from them until much later than kids without those issues. There are just too many factors with kids. Many schools do only placement tests, which don't give an IQ score but instead use reasonable and practical methods to determine if a child is being challenged enough at their grade level.

Please don't do online autism testing 😂 the testing is actually incredibly standardized. It's over a 3 hour evaluation that involves an hour of interviewing your family to discuss your childhood and developmental milestones. And the whole "aspergers, high functioning, severely autistic" are outdated and incorrect labels. In the DSM-5 there are 3 levels of autism now. Level 1, 2, and 3. I'm clinically and properly diagnosed. EVERYONE has "autistic traits" but not everyone is autistic.
@truthseeker9249 Жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I'm clinically and properly diagnosed as someone with Asperger's and someone who is high functioning. I went through a hospital to get my diagnosis. Nothing about any of that sounds incorrect at all. They are just facts. I have low level Autism and I can function properly at least for the most part and I'm capable of taking care of myself. That's literally was Asperger's and high functioning each mean respectively and that's all there is to it. To say that it's outdated is a stretch and to say it's incorrect is an even bigger stretch. This is my opinion though.
@DeeKate Жыл бұрын
@truthseeker9249 @truthseeker9249 so you were most likely diagnosed under the DSM-4 and under that, all the terminology you mentioned were clinically accepted and accurate. I was diagnosed last year under the DSM-5 and they've updated the terminology. They now just have 3 levels of autism. Its a very easy Google search 😊

@ihatethisusernameupdate they needed to interview someone who could testify to my childhood behaviors and milestones. Someone who's close enough that they've seen you in multiple scenarios and at your best and worst. If sure if that really wasn't an option, there's alternatives. I was tested and diagnosed through CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) it's Canada-wide. They tend to insist on the pre-assessment interview. It was hinted I'd lose my spot without someone to participate because they want to follow the diagnostic criteria very specifically.

This is true. I think young kids like this don't have a lot to cling to in terms of their perceived abilities as they have no real-world experience. So for them, a lot hinges on the SAT. I taught myself and I have a six-figure job at an industrial tech company in robotics sales and mechanical engineering. The SAT does not matter unless you're trying to get into a fancy shmancy school.

In my highschool, my AP classes made us write pages and pages of essays for homework, to the point where we barely had any sleep or time for ourselves. Some students managed to get a 4.8 and I just wonder how they even have the time to take that many AP classes. then I discuss AP classes with my friends from another school and their AP classes are so chill! They literally have no homework and the teacher focuses on passing the AP exam instead of throwing essays at them! Their teacher literally spends all year long telling them what can be on the exam and focusing on that and it really made me wish i would have transferred instead of studying so much because in the end, when you get to college, you're just average

I passed 2 AP classes for studio art and 2d design. If I remember correctly I got a 1579(not entirely sure but I know it was in the 15's) and the reason why was because of my English. I hated math with a passion so I would do bare minimum and stay within the 80's so I wouldn't risk failing if I didn't do great on a test. In school my math teachers were actually pretty open about the tests, and math in general, including my senior math teacher. So when I took that test(did it once cause screw paying again) all I kept in mind was what they emphasized about how to pass any math test. What they said was "if you can't answer a hard question then move on and look for the easy questions. They(SAT people) expect you to fail those but they do expect you to pass the easy ones." And that's what I did. I looked for every easy question I could find and then moved back to the harder ones to see if I could solve any. But what really got me that score was my English. I've always been good at English(90's - 100) because I read a lot and learned tips and tricks from my teachers. So yeah, I definitely agree that any test that tries to level intelligence is so stupid and meaningless. It's really only there to determine the amount of state funding public schools get and that's an entire problem in and of itself.

By the time they get to high school they don’t have to work as hard to get a good school because they are more used to that environment. I can not wrap my head around the US sat system. You can try it again and again and again if you just have enough money. Here in Germany and everywhere else I know about, you have one shot at your "university-entrance diploma acquired at a secondary school in Germany" (or short Abitur, high school diploma with qualification for university). It is not "pay to be allowed to study". You know the exact date years in advance and have to prepare for the tests. If you do not do your due diligence to prepare for them and fail the exams or at least get bad grades, there is only one person to blame: Yourself. Maybe it works everywhere else, because only muricans are so highly allergic to personal accountability.

I lived in California through my middle school years. There was a year where everyone was preparing to take the SAT. The teachers would put unexcusable amount of pressure to do well as it would determine what collage we would get to go to. I being autistic, but not knowing at the time, feed off of that pressure to do well till it was the night before and I stayed in my room all night crying. My mom asked what was wrong and told her the pressure I was under to take the test and do well. That infuriated my parents and they looked at the rule booklet I got to take home and saw in very small fine print that the test was 100% optional. Next day my parents went with me to school to talk to my teachers about it. They asked several times if the test was optional to which the teacher tried avoiding the question entirely trying to get them to accept that I "had" to do it. Eventually they wore her down and she slipped up saying "Yes but!" And that was all my parents needed to hear. For the next few minutes my parents said nothing but "Then she will not be taking it." I was the only one in the entire school who didn't take the test. And found out the more people they had taking the test and how well they did would determine how much money the school would get from the state. After middle school I lived in another state for my high school years and was relived to find that the SAT is completely obsolete compared to the ACT, which I didn't even try at learning from my previous experience.

SAT, PSAT, GED -those are all quite foreign concepts outside of the US. I know GED’s are for completing highschool? What are SAT’s?
@beev5496 Жыл бұрын
GEDs, HiSETs, and TASCs are all general knowledge tests that include all the generalized subjects in high school that let you get a high school equivalent diploma. They're all tests that allow you into most/all community colleges and a lot of universities. An SAT is basically a college admission test. Similar to a GCSE or kind of like an A-Level in the UK... but more of a GCSE, just for college. PSATs are the preliminary SATs that are basically a practice test to see how well you would do on a college SAT. There's only 85 countries that accept SAT scores (UK being one) so I couldn't tell you if there are other countries that have a similar "SAT" but that's what they are. I took my PSAT on Khan Academy.

GPA is very very incinsistent and stupid. In my school, there is an early college program to get an associates degree early, but since the classes are are at a different school, they don’t count as weighted classes like AP classes, so if you go into the program, you can’t get even a higher GPA than those who just took very easy AP classes.

In the Balkans every University has its own test and you are scored based on the test results and your average grade. There’s also a test similar to SATs but the score is only used if you’re tied with someone on the entrance ranking (which is very rare). I think this is a good option because you can focus on the subjects for your University test. In addition, test score takes the most part of the final score, which is also good bc average grade in high schools can be different based on teachers (some schools are more difficult than the others).
@pablovegas743 Жыл бұрын
I live in the Balkans too. In my country you can get into university two ways: after you successfully finish 12th grade, you have to take a Matura, and the grades you get from the Matura you can candidate in the university with them. The second option is to take the university exam/test, that they offer, and you can candidate with that grade you got from it.

I am doing much better now however. In all advanced with decent scores. I don’t think Covid will affect your education long term. But it definitely does something to some people.

But like the easiest problems were on the calculator one. I am neurodivergent as well as autism & ADHD but I still did well. But the ADHD had me never studying & just trying to rush it. I did space out during some of the ELA portions. Another edit: Covid fucked up my GPA. During my 11th grade year. Sucked booty. I am an introvert so it's not like I was missing people. I just didn't thrive online. I needed to be in a class.

you are missing the point of a standardized test. the point is to show that you can put in the work and study for college level courses. just because you hate the test doesn’t mean it’s wrong. the test doesn’t care about your feelings. it’s a benchmark that everyone should meet. BECAUSE everyone comes from different high schools and contexts, there needs to be a standard of what everyone should know before entering college
