My guy beats 2 and 3 were just straight horizontal lines. I get it's not the point of the video but that is nowhere near proper conducting. There's no weight or bounce in his conducting and it wouldn't convey any clear or proper intent during an actual performance. The baton isn't kept level or straight either it gets flung out instead of being constant making it unclear to people with different viewing angles.

@@sungvin Yes, horizontal movement is correct, but it needs to at least have a small amount of verticality. The person in the video did purely horizontal lines for beats 2-3. There are three main reasons as to why purely horizontal movement is bad. The first is it's just not clear. The switch from pure left to pure right has no weight without veritcal movement and makes it extremely difficult to feel the beat, it's very abrupt and sudden. The second is because ensembles are rarely formatted in a straight line in front of the conductor. Most ensembles have players off to the sides, elevated players looking down, or players far away from the conductor. If the conductor is doing only horizontal movement someone to the side or far away won't be able to visually tell when beats 2-3 happen because of their viewing angle/distance. Adding a small bounce fixes this issue because they can use the vertical movement as a guide instead (shown through the simplest form of 2 beats being mostly up and down). The final reason has to do with feeling and expression within the musical work or conductor, conducting in pure straight lines is very robotic and emotionless. Adding acceleration, verticality, etc all allow different conductors to express their ideal view for the music easily through their conducting. It's important to note that the conductors true purpose within a (professional) ensemble isn't to keep time, as professional musicians can already do that themselves, but rather unify the phrasing and expression of the ensemble so they can easily blend together. Straight lines as a conducting form doesn't come anywhere near close enough to convey that. If you want to see proof just google "4/4 conducting pattern" or watch any professional conductor, every single image or video will feature a bounce on each beat. There is also a specific term in music called the "ictus" that directly relates to the clarity of the beats within a conducting pattern and refers to the imaginary horizontal line that the baton would 'bounce' on to convey a beat. I'm not sure what you mean by the bat thing. I'm fine with any tool being used to conduct as long as it is clear and conveys the conductors intent. The main concern with the flinging of the baton is that they can very easily fly out of the hands because they're typically held very lightly in a somewhat awkward hand position, batons are also stupidly expesive so it's kind of harrowing to see. But the flinging does amplify the same issue as pure horizontal lines. Holy this is longer than I though it would be. Sorry if some stuff isn't clear I need to sleep. Umm TLDR: Purely horizontal lines aren't clear for both the timing of the beats and phrasing/expressiveness. Adding the smallest bit of verticality fixes this.
