I just think it's worse than the mk7, which was worse than the mk6 Imo. I think pedestrian crash regulations are partly to blame for the bulbous 'forehead'- so many car makers struggle with this. BMW definitely the worst in terms of front end design and cohesion.

A2 the JDM fan boy I guess they wanna enter the modern era with a futuristic look (in the case of the ID lineup). I honestly don’t dig the Honda e too much, seems a bit out of place to me in 2020. But I’m young so I didn’t live in the 90s so I guess I just can’t have the same feeling about cars as people who lived then. Though to be honest I don’t dig the ID.3 a whole lot either, I like the ID.4 though.

One of the reasons why I want a Golf VII GTI: It's maybe the most Golf-ish Golf ever built. It's built with simplicity and cleanness in mind and that's why it just LOOKS about 20 times better than the Golf VIII.

Got myself a Mk7 TSI a few months ago, even with the smaller engine it's still incredibly fun to drive! The Mk8 in my opinion is the opposite of what a Golf should be

The funniest thing is, both the Mk6 and Mk8 don't actually exist. The Mk6 is a heavily facelifted Mk5, whereas the Mk8 is a heavily facelifted Mk7. It's also funny that "Mk6" and "Mk8" are my most hated Golf generations while the Mk5 and "Mk7" are my favorite ones

One of my favorite redesigns to date. I thought the Mk8 styling was such a huge step down from the Mk7 despite largely being an evolution of it. This is much more in line with what I wanted to see out of it!

@@die4race Hmm. Well all Golfs after the mk4 were based on that one. But like most cars from that era, (basically until about 2012-2014) I find them too soft and dull looking. Round and friendly, but without any interesting details. This is just my opinion of course. I do tend to really like car designs from the past 3-4 years.

I think they don't fit the car at all. They look too old-school and are a touch boring to me. But then again, I am a huge fan of two-tone wheels. The wheels that ore on the original picture on this GTI are not that good looking either though. But I wouldn't pick the R32 ones.

I always felt these lights were too low, but changing the angle does the trick as well - they now look more like in Passat. Good job!

The Golf IV is the best Golf, imo. Did you know the IV is the only Golf without the red line? Or that it had so many different bodykit combinations? Bodykits: GTI VR6 (red 6), GTI R, R32, V6 and GTI Edition 20/25. The ones without a bodykit were: GTI (silver I), GTI (red I), GTI VR6 (silver 6), GTI V5 (silver 5), V5 (red 5), TDI (red TDI, the GTI TDI) and TDI (red DI, the GT TDI). The other body variations include: Cabrio (side skirts and rear end from the Golf 3 Cabrio), City (facelift basically, but it has no difference in its editions, like GT or GTI since they all share the same kit) and Variant (which has the Bora/Jetta Variant rear).

Though this GTI is pretty disappointing. It just doesn't look sporty enough. And I don't like that grille design. I do like the normal mk8 versions though (in the right spec).

Girlish? in what way? Though I do think that the GTI version is a letdown. The normal Golf 8 looks better. I actually liked the Golf 7 because it has a smaller grille than other cars. Made it more unique. This GTi ruins that part. At least the normal Golf 8 has a smaller grille and I think it looks pretty good.

I think you nailed it. Especially steepening up the headlight area - I hadn’t spotted was was weird about the front, but that’s it! It’s gazing at the stars rather than looking down the road.

I am actually pretty happy with the design, I guess it takes some time to get used to and it may look better in nature than in pictures. The only change I like are the fog lights.

The headlights look like they are sleeping - VW, get your act together It's not even just the headlights, it's the whole front. Also, to answer your question at the end I think your taste/philosophy is great, on the right track, and in general the right way to go. The only criticism I will give is that the wheels seem a bit too big and the lower plastic piece could've been a little bit wider compared to the headlights.

I wish on the redesign he stretched out the front grill more and make the lines in the new grill more like the VW design one with the fog light design. I also would have liked to see the headlights inverted. I'm sure it would have looked much better that way.

In your design I mostly like the front bumper and the wheels. With the original lights I don't have any problems, but to add more corners to the hood and areas around the lights is a nice idea. But the fog lights of your design I don't like. But they're much better than the original ones. But the kind of the once at the golf 7 gti is so nice. All together, very well done, nice work.

Good effort, much improved; what were they thinking with that lower air intake and 5 spangly lights. Slant of the bonnet and slipped down headlights doesn't work either. Previous generation was spot on.

VAG is one of the rare companies that can be "conservative" in design, and yet still be timeless, and it doesn't take a super radical design like some companies to attract buyers. I'm a MK7 Gti owner, and even MK3,4,5,6 , i sill do double takes and marvel at how fresh they still are. Where the Ford FOcus, needs a more radical design to stay relevant, not knocking FoST and FoRS owners (cars rock btw)

This is stunning, and what you are saying about Golf design, and the design of VW's generally is spot on. My father worked for VW for 53 years, being born in Germany as well, and up until he passed away in 2014, he told me how VW's residual values and brand loyalty are down to simple, clean, minimalist but elegant designs that serve a purpose, and how each new generation respect the design of the former one, and make the brand recognisable. VW are trying way too hard with this design. They need to scale it back again. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
