These are always great videos. Amazing how many times the carpenters put the diagonal going the wrong way. I don't think they realize what it's even for. It transfers the sag to the hinge side so there's some support. And you really can't put a 2x4 into tension very easily. Better to put it in compression. Great video.

Agreed! Its not a perfect solution, the gate is failing, along with the adjacent fence. I believe a new fence will happen soon :) Eric

Good video Eric! Just a note, the latch mechanism is mounted upside down. The part that moves to latch the gate can be unscrewed and mounted so it's on top. It still doesn't fix the sagging gate (which you already fixed) but it is less likely to get stuck shut. Thanks for sharing!

The angled support is going the wrong way. Instead of going from the bottom left to the top right, it should go from the top right to the bottom left.

Exactly. In construction like this, with joints that are sure to loosen, that diagonal member will usually have a longer effective life as a compression member instead of a tension member. The key is a snug fit between the compression member and the corner components so it is not dependent purely on the fasteners to transmit the force.

Yes, great point. This is a cable and not a solid rod type turnbuckle, so it has to be attached this way. The gate needs to be replaced to really fix this :)

The reason it sagged is that the cross brace should be reversed so the upper part is nearest the gate
