Tessie, I know we've talked about this before, but we came from similar backgrounds. The Amish/Mennonite tradition came from Northern Europe and my mom's background was in the same area. The child-raising styles were very similar -- kind of a "spare the rod; spoil the child theory." It did make for a well-ordered household -- "like clockwork." Mom used to say that in her view the home (and garden) were like her own "little kingdom." There was a kind of security that came along with that, but as I got older, I found that I struggled somewhat to figure out who I really was! When an "authority figure" decides everything in a home -- including what everyone's opinions are -- you find that having a differing opinion raises your anxiety level. We can be well into adulthood before we develop our unique individual self without feeling that it's somehow "wrong" to be different. I think you've done an amazing job of being that butterfly that emerges from a cocoon -- with the help of Our Father. God bless you! 😀

I can identify with the whole thought there. I was raised in a hodge podge Jewish home. Dad told the school not to involve his children in their holidays. So I was called Dirty Jew. We had a social worker come to our hotel room where we lived and she brought Christmas gifts to my brother and I and I will never forget that jesters of love that later was a planted seed that led me to Jesus. I celebrated Christmas with my friend my dad sent me to live with. My dad didnt know but it was really sweet. I changed and it was a good thing. My dad was like that. You can't disagree.

My dad was raised by Quaker parents and he had a somewhat strict childhood. My mom was raised by a very strict mom. I remember when I was little I was terrified of her. She and my Grampa on my mom's side passed away a week apart back in the early 60s. I was 5 or 6. Because of the way they were raised I was raised pretty strict. My husband grew up in a complete opposite home. Alot of abuse, alcohol and very dysfunctional. He left school and went to join the service. He never regretted it and servered for 20 years. After we got married in 1979 he realized that I was a different type of person than he was familiar with. He approached me and wanted to be saved. He is the kindest, gentlest man. What a blessing and then to see both children saved.

My mom was no saint, but she taught me to keep a clean, tidy, organized home. If I'd come home from school in the winter and throw my coat on the couch, she would remind me that my coat was to go to my room. Ptsd is an odd thing. I got teased in elementary school by a certain girl because I was part of a small group of kids who went to a gifted and talented class on Fridays right after lunch. This girl would sit across from me and tease me,hurry up and eat, you'll be late for your class. Shed make me a ball of nerves. We had to come live at my mother in laws may of last year. She did me the same way,get in my face first thing every morning, you better get up and eat your breakfast. It triggered anxiety in me,I've had anxiety every morning since then, but it is getting better. I wish people would think before doing things, put yourself in another person's situation have some compassion.

My mom was a military veteran, so I grew with "her way or no way" attitude! Strict rules, do it right, or don't do it at all! Hanging clothes on a line(whether indoors or outdoors) No erasing mistakes on homework or do it all over again! Was an only child for 7+ years until my brother was born, so I had quite a strict upbringing! But looking back on it now, it made me who I am today and would not change a thing! (12yrs of Catholic school was an adventure in itself, but again would not change it) So I understand where you are coming from! My father was also easy going and was my refuge in the storm! Everyone has their story, and they are all different! That's what makes people so interesting! Love hearing your story and how it influenced you to this day! Hope you have a Happy Mother's Day!💐🌹💐🌹😊❤

Sounds a lot like my early days except we did wear pants. My mum didn’t though, she still doesn’t. She did all our baking too. Almost always in the kitchen. We never went hungry although we didn’t have much. Her and dad both worked hard. We all had our own chores to do. It was good, we learned a great deal from them. Now a days a lot of young people don’t seem to know how to cook or bake. Have a great evening everyone!

I wasn't raised Mennonite or Amish but my Mama stayed at home. She kept an immaculate and organized house. She fixed 3 meals a day, did all the yard work almost. She took us to school and picked us up and was always there til i was 12. I am the baby, then she went back to work. However, in our house whatever Daddy said was how it would be, so very strict. I was not allowed to do alot of things my friends did or wear the popular clothing etc. I am somewhat older than you, maybe 10 to 12yrs. But alot of what you talk about and do either reminds me of childhood or I do the same things. Except for canning, I had to learn that from you! My Mama said when she left the farm at 18 sh was never ever canning again and she wasn't kidding! She didn't not for my Daddy or to teach me. Daddy had gardens a few years but then gave up. I love a garden and all the fresh veggies and fruit! ❤😊

I grew up till age 12 in my dads house. He took my brother and I away from my mom when we all lived in Texas. Then we came from Texas to Missouri on 20.00 in an old buick. By age 12 I was sent to live with my friends family on a farm where I learned the value of family for a while and hard work. I married at 24 to my husband of 24 yrs now and he was 35 or 36. Dont feel like doing the math. Anyway its been an amazing journey and I can see the hand of God throughout our lives.

Dad built another story onto our house and did all the man stuff..😁. When I was 12 I took over the homemaking. I now at 55 have always loved homemaking and still do. I do not do housebuilding or painting. I love how you do your decor. My Parents are both very wonderful. ❤

I watched that show "super happy fun people". I think that was the name of it. Anyways I found it very misleading. I remember watching 19 kids and counting, In the super happy show they said that boys and girls, men and women, had their own jobs and they showed a boy laying on the couch while the girls cleaned and cooked. On 19 kids show all the kids had indoor household chores and when the father was working on a house the girls would help too. It wasn't a real honest show it was a Hollywood, we dislike Christian, show.
