Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Күн бұрын

This 1920's silver mine has it all. Artifacts, beautiful mineral vein, tram buckets, interesting workings and a great hike to get there. After hiking up a canyon/wash we exit the canyon on a road that goes to the mine. Near the mine are the remnants of an old camping trailer which must have been home to one of the miners. The trailer looked home made and had wood spoked wheels. We found a couple of interesting items at the trailer.
At the mine we found a beautifully timbered portal with a wood door that was in great condition. The mine workings consist of drifts, crosscuts and raises. We worked our way to the top of the mine through the stopes. The mineral vein is spectacular and one of the most interesting we have seen. The ore shipments averaged 15.5% lead and 10 ounces of silver /ton. There was also zinc, copper and gold taken in smaller amounts.
Further down the mountain is a lower tram terminal where we found three tram buckets and a loading station where trucks would have been loaded with ore.
We had a great time exploring this one and hope that you enjoy watching the video!

I enjoyed being taken on another mining adventure. The videos offer a very nice visual of your journeys. I was stationed at White Sands NM from 1963 through 1965 and had the opportunity to explore a mine in the Organ Mountains and also a few other mines on base. One mine extracted garnets for sandpaper. One of my most favorite memories. ❤❤❤😁😁😁

Hello Mark - I did the Bataan Memorial Death March event as a 26 mile ruck march out at White Sands in 2004 and 2005 and part of the route took us past the remains of some old mine workings, maybe the same ones you're talking about. I fell in love with that part of the country as well as West Texas. It's about as different from Southwestern Pennsylvania as you can get but I feel almost spiritually connected to the desert out there (not to get all hippie on ya, haha).

How in the world did you not get lost with all those twists and turns you made through those stopes and drifts? I was so turned around I couldn't find my kitchen to get a snack. Well at least you got out of that death shaft where you were free climbing down those rock bashed ladders after running out of rope. When Julie broke that rung on the ladder 400 ft. above the bottom of the shaft my heart jumped and I fell off the couch. Got lucky though, it was only a foot to the floor. But I must admit I have not seen colors like you filmed since Timothy Leary died. The minerals in the rock formations were Beautiful. Glad you made it out alive.

Hello Tom and Julie. Yeah I watch Jeff's videos too. He sure is full of energy that's for sure. That display rack outside reminds me of something that would hold sunglasses that you spin around and find one you like. When you entered that mine the back was barely over Julie's head. Short miners I guess. That old trailer was something, cant tell if it was home made or maybe it had lots of fixes as things are falling apart. Inside the mine with the wall with all the colors was real unique looking. Oh that Bourbon Whiskey Bottle was cool, love that it still had a label on it. Well Take care you two. Love the video.

Hi, new comer to your channel. I like your explore videos, and wanted to help ID some of the stuff you came across in this vid. The trailer is really something! Very early travel trailer! The wood spoked wheels indicate 1920s, or the trailer was built on an older axle from a junk car the owner had handy. In the 20s-30s, there were plans you could order out of Popular Mechanics magazine, and you could build your own “Pullman” trailer! The name Pullman was used because most trailers of that era mimicked the Pullman heavyweight passenger cars of the railroad. That’s why the roof cross members were arched with the steel corners. The train whistle is really crazy to find! I have the same one, my father bought me from a model train store when I was a kid, in the 1980s 🤣 I still have it, too! I like the fact you guys inspect the artifacts, that stuff is what makes exploring worth it! 🙏 keep it up!

The soft stalactite 'calcite' you were touching is most likely Soda Nitre (Sodium Nitrate) Fairly common in a lot of old mines. If the mine is dry the Nitre accumulates easily. Nitre is very water soluble.

Yes, we do. Julie carries an oxygen meter and I carry a four gas detector. It's very rare for there to be bad air or low oxygen in the everal hundred mines that we've been in. Thanks for the great question, Dennis!👍

What's up with the ski poles?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
If you are asking what we use them for, I'll tell you. Trekking poles are the most useful tool a hiker can have. They have uses too numerous for me to completely cover but a few of them are balance, traction, reducing knee strain, especially when going downhill, defense against snakes and animals, moving cacti and thorny brush out of your way, getting your upper body involved especially going uphill, as a camera holder to take photos over the edge of a mine shaft, keeping your hands elevated so you don't get swollen fingers on long hot hikes. Very useful for things like that. They're like 4WD for humans. We never hike without them.

all that foliation and I saw patches of green (maybe copper) in there a few times. I'm guessing they probably hit a pocket of good material up top so they went down and that petered out and in all the foliation it would be a guess to try to find the payload. 1920's is about the time wooden spokes went out of style so gold under 20$ an oz they only went for the big chunky meanwhile anything we would go crazy for now they left as low grade ore back then.
