Another good reason to always use the fuel shut off and run it dry after every use. You made the removal of the carb look easy, but for the rest of us it's a PITA!!!!!!

100%. I only made it look easy because I was expecting it to be a disaster! And honestly.. it was, but I knew what to expect, plus I work with finicky things all the time

Thanks Steve! I agree about those Honda intakes, they warp often. I see so many of them for sale, almost always missing the intake cover, which baffles me. It also worries me that they ran the engine that way!

help, have same engine performed same procedure , I thought, started first pull with choke on, ran about ten seconds and died when the choke moved , hard to start even with choke second time, any suggestions are much appreciated, tried govenor and replaced springs

What it sounds like is that the carb is still clogged. It's not providing enough fuel to run the engine. Likely main jet is clogged. Even tho you cleaned it once, you might have to clean it again, possibly even a third time (it sucks). Even when I use my Ultrasonic Cleaner, I have had to clean some carburetors several times. Try cleaning it again, and see if that helps. If you have torch tip cleaners, try those to poke out the little passages (or 'b' guitar strings work great!) An engine that only runs while choked, is not getting enough fuel to run fully open. The moment you open the choke, a flood of fresh air comes in and moves the fuel air mixture into a non-ideal mixture, ie below the minimum explosive limit. Too much air, not enough fuel, so no boom. If all else fails, it could be that the carb has just given up. I have a couple Honda carbs that have done that. I've cleaned them at least a half dozen times, poked them silly, tried everything I can to try to clear them, but no matter how many times I tried, it just would not work. I ended up replacing it with an aftermarket carburetor. Try spraying a bit of carburetor spray into the carb, and see if it'll start and die on carb spray. Because if it does, then it is definitely a fueling issue. The other possibility, you have water in your fuel, inside the tank. Which will migrate happily down to the carb...

did also notice there were two gaskets on plastic piece when disassembled (next to metal shield)

Yes, one goes between the metal shield, and the carburetor, the other between the metal shield, and the air filter. Honda uses a lot of gaskets. I much prefer the Studs over Bolts too, but do it once, or twice, and it doesn't get any less finicky, you just swear a bit less.
