I would chose Hunter. He is a rough and tough man with a sound mind. I spent my time with the Seabees for 0ver 30 years as a mechanic/operator working on all equipment that Navy buys. I started working on a D9 in Thailand clearing the jungle for our battalion to build an airstrip for the Air Force during Vietnam war. Cat is the best.

In 1980 I was fresh out of 10 years with the Marines and landed a job in Telluride, Colo. While I wasn't an experienced equipment operator, a Marine can do pert near anything he puts his mind into. I spent the summer ripping and pushing boulders towards the rock crusher with this same model Cat D-8. It was a beast and beat the hell out of me.

I would go with HeavyD as well. His size and weight means I could eat well for at least 2 weeks before I would need an alternate food supply. The others look to skinny and tough they would be to hard to chew and would dry out after cooking. Sorry but you are the one who asked.

Just change the FUEL filters a couple of times should get you by till you can get her out of it's Homestead. You Rock on all this Recovery you do. I Love that you are saving this old Forget machine's. They have LIFE in them. You are great for getting them started, getting them out of there Homestead. You are a Amazing person. Wish I could give you my free time to help. Myself saved a 1978 Dynahoe 190 it was dead. Have had it sense 2003. Put 100s. Of hours on her. No major issues other than usual. Seals on hydraulic systems. All new filters. The old stuff is FUN to get started. And put to work again.

The poly engine. You first started the pony, threw the decompressor lever on the CAT, engaged the pony to turn the CAT. You typically ran the pony until the manifold on the cat got warm to touch, then you threw the decompressor lever back, it would turn the Cat over and belch out black smoke and rumble to life! Poney's never failed, especially when the temp was below zero!

Been a long time since I have seen or heard an old D8H run. Growing up in NW Colorado, my dad worked for a sand an grovel company that had one. An I remember them having to use the pony to start it. An it brought back good memories. An if I was in a situation where I had to team up with someone to survive or make it out of the mountains, Heavy D your the one I would take with me.

I believe the pony motor served two purposes ... one (obviously) was to start the engine. The second thing it did was, I'm pretty sure they had the same cooling system as the big diesel engine, so as the pony motor was running for a while, it would preheat the diesel engine, making it much easier to start. I remember being out with my Dad in the woods of Montana where he built logging roads. They'd run that pony motor for 15-20 minutes (IIRC) before trying to start the big engine. Worked pretty well for what it was.

The manual said at least 10 minutes, preferably 15 before you even tried to start it. Same thing with the hydraulic and transmission. I would start the equipment every morning a half hour before the beginning of the shift. These guys don't know what they are doing. They are just in a rush to hear it run and don't care about how much damage they do to it because it was free and junk when they got it.

"Pony Motor" better known as a sidecar, was there to start the diesel in cold weather. It shared the water jacket with the diesel. Gas engines start easier in cold weather. You started it and let it run about 20-30 minutes to warm the block of the diesel.

What I have noticed in the past is checking rear end dif fluid and in your case final drive fluid and if it looks like my aunt betty's meat loaf you might want to change for best results before trying to drive it off the the side mountain and I'm glad to see the lube gun come out.but all and all love the vids thanks.

Err. Dozers are not abandoned. They are just left there as usually prospectors OWN THEM. They leave them on the plot of land they are working on to COME BACK TO. That is why stuff is Locked. Someone has a key. Using a winch with a hook to break the lock was = breaking in. Many Logging firms leave their equipment there because to truck it out is a "Pain". Just because YOU find it, does not make it YOURS. This is basically grand theft Auto's. The thing runs. That means someone OWNS IT. He probably did not move it because he knew he would have to repair the one track. Or because he is right beside a road he would bring up a flatbed and drive it on or drag it on. The motor was running fine. It is registered like a car...so somebody has the rights to that machine.

Hey fellas I’ve watched you pull out two dosers now. This is an old vid so don’t no if you would ever read these comments. Anyway from an old Canadian hard rock miner who moved heavy tracked drilling equipment underground I’d like you men to try out the miner way. Not sure if dimensions of a D8 but what you need to build is a large boiler plate skid. Example say ten feet wide by twenty feet long. On the corners weld gussets for 2” clevises. Chain the dozer on all four corners criss cross. Weld a lip on each end like a slay. Again hook up two ten foot cable slings or heavy chain criss crossed to the tow machine hitch point. Also for stability and straight tracking while towing weld two railway ties onto the bottom off the skid. Hardest part will be jacking up the dozer to push the skid under the tracks then winch or pull it completely onto skid. Chain it down. Hook up tow away. Canadian hard rock miner OUT!!!

A lot of times it can be made to run without too much effort but the cost to get it in condition to do any amount of work is more than it's worth. That's not always the case of course.
