I just used graphs: Draw the triangle, knowing the vertices are at (0, 0), (1, 0), (0.5, 0.5sqrt3) [Final y-coord is worked out using pythagoras, and the x-coord is the midpoint of the other two.] Now get your system of equations: (1) y = 0 (2) y = xsqrt3 (3) y = -sqrt3(x - 1) [Using y2 - y1 = m(x2 - x1), and m = change in y / change in x, and subbing in the points above.] Label the empty space between the triangle edge and the start of box 1 "b". Rewrite the points where the boxes touch the triangle in terms of a and b. That's (b, a) and (6a + b, 3a) Sub the first coord into equation (2) to get b in terms of a: a = bsqrt3, so b = a/sqrt3 Rewrite the second coordinate only in terms of a: (6a + a/sqrt3, 3a) Sub this into equation (3): 3a = -sqrt3(6a + a/sqrt3 - 1) Rearrange and solve for a: 3a = -a - 6a*sqrt3 + sqrt3 4a + 6a*sqrt3 = sqrt3 a(4 + 6sqrt3) = sqrt3 a = sqrt3/(4 + 6sqrt3) Rationalise the denominator and simplify: a = -(4sqrt3 - 18)/92 a = (18 - 4sqrt3)/92 a = (9 - 2sqrt3)/46 This gives us the same answer as in the video, but definitely isn't the easiest way to solve it!

I found the area of the blue shaded region without using a calculator (I used it only when I needed to find the sine of 60 deg and to check how I should order the fractions so it doesn't equal a negative)!! So I found the value of a^2 , (2a)^2 , and (3a)^2 by multiplying the fractions together and distributing the terms. I found that a^2 = (93 - 36 sqrt 3) / 2116 , (2a)^2 = (93 - 36 sqrt 3) / 529 , and (3a)^2 = (93 - 36 sqrt 3) / 235.11 (recurring decimal). I added all of this up to get (1302 - 504 sqrt 3) / 2116. To find the area of the triangle, I used the sine theorem since it's an equilateral triangle. 1 / 2 x 1 x 1 x sin 60 deg = (sqrt 3) / 4. Then, I subtracted the area of the unshaded region from this to get (1033 sqrt 3 - 1302) / 2116. Is my answer for the blue shaded region correct?
Area of squares = (1²a²) + (2²a²) + (3²a²) = 14a² = (1302 - (504 x sqrt(3))) / 2116 = 0.20276294 Area of triangle = 0.5 x Base [= 1.0] x Height [= 0.5 x tan(60)] = 0.5² x tan(60) = 0.4330127 Blue area = Area of triangle - Area of squares = 0.23024976
