In this video we explore the brand new chicken breed developed here in Australia known as the Quamby. A Dual Purpose chicken that we think is going to be a perfect fit for our homestead. We look at the story of how they were developed, their needs as well as a cost comparison between them and typical hybrid meat chickens (broilers or cornish cross).
Quamby backyard chooks are a new breed made in Tasmania and great for both eggs, meat (ABC)

We currently only have 3 due to space restrictions but we have an English Dorking, a black Australorp and a Golden lace wyendot/barnevaldor cross and they are absolutely amazing. Been my therapy girls for the last 6 years and only just started to slow down with the egg production but also a very integral part of our family. When the inevitable happens I would happily have a a bit of a mix similar to them.

They sound very interesting. We have Australorps and have raised our second generation from eggs. This resulted in 5 roosters which lasted 6 months free ranging until we had to remove them as they were too much for the girls. So we researched and taught ourself to cull them and they are now in our freezer. They were BIG boys. They do need to be cooked slower and for longer and they do taste different (not bad) to shop bought. Our girls lay more eggs than we can cope with so I'm glassing those. I have 5 more chicks in the incubator atm from one of the girls and am hoping for more females than males . . but the cycle continues.

I love our dozen Hy-Lines, they are the cutest most friendly and quietist hens of all, making them perfect for the backyard. They are no fuss. They don’t eat as much as heritage breeds because they’re smaller. They don’t go broody like heritage breeds. And the best part of all they give us sht loads of eggs. Our oldest Hy-Lines turn 6 in about 2 months, and are still going strong. If you’re looking at keeping chickens in a suburban backyard, your only real option to avoid noise complaints, is to go Hy-Line or ISA Brown, the quietist of them all. I’ve owned light Sussex’s, they’re a beautiful looking bird, but fk they’re noisy, and they go broody and stop paying. Decided to go Hy-Lines and never looked back.

Ahh perfect! I’ll admit I’ve never had true hy-lines before as they’re a trademarked breed and none of our breeders were licences for them so I never got to know the breed. Plenty of standard commercial browns though and the best we ever got from them was 5 years. That’s a good endorsement and great point about suburban chooks!

Interesting breed. We’re suburban so we are into our Pekin Bantams, but if i were to go rural I’d certainly look at a larger breed.

Never heard of the Quamby will have to look out for it always kept eye out for Australorps and had to take Isa Browns as not keen to pay $30/chicken at markets and giving a rest on day olds especially the recent heat. Have you looked at Turkeys? I had 30 but wild dogs took them out am keen to get some more the eggs are big and fine to eat and the meat is great - just need the starter feed to have antibiotics I believe and higher protein for the animal. They also don't crow in a close setting and are good guard birds used to know some one was around when the males went off gobble gobble.

Prices are crazy hey. That’s why we incubate for ourselves. Haven’t looked at Turkeys yet, but definitely interested

I had/have Australorp they produced more than 300 a day, sadly lost a load to fox only 3 left. They're a good solid bird (dual purpose in theory) but they are prone to becoming broody one's always in the chicken prison to break the cycle. Am interested to get some fertilized eggs to try them to hatch out apparently very good mothers.

Ahh, that sux man. Yeah, I’ve lost plenty of chooks to foxes over the years. Also got good at, shall we say, removing them from the equation 😜

The price of Cornish Cross struck me as very high - went to check a local hatchery near me and they're $3.20-$5 CAD ($4-6 AUD). Why are they $13 near you?!?
@reganperry
@reganperry 4 сағат бұрын
Oh wow. Yeah those prices make it at least worth it. I think our local hatchery mainly supplies small scale so their batches are more expensive.

Perfect! Yeah, this egg shortage is crazy hey. Just heard about customers in Aldi who were putting together whole cartons from the broken eggs that were left behind on the shelves. What world are we even living in?!
