What an amazing and well maintained home. My grandma had red carpeting in the 1960's. I grew up in the late 1950's and 1960's. A " milkman" was a thing then. He came to the back door. My mother would be in her nightgown sometimes when he came into the back door. Not a big deal in those days. No doubt the milkman was used to seeing the neighborhood moms in various states of morning dress. I had a friend who lived in an apartment built pre-1920. Each apartment had milk door. Great video. Thank you.

Twin Pines Dairy milkman delivered the metal wire "6 pack" carrier of glass milk bottles with the paper caps into our milk chute. P.S. (If your sibling didn't look like the rest of the family . . . it was "joked" about them being the Milkman's baby)

Fun fact, my dad was a milkman. 😊 I use to go with him on his route when I was a kid. Great memories and super hard work! We still have them here, too.
@gardendormouse64797 күн бұрын
In the early 70s, my family still got milk delivery. There was a little insulated metal box on our front stoop, next to the front door, where he'd put the milk. I have a pic of me and my sister standing next to it, in our Halloween costumes.

Nice house. The milk door reminded me of a silver insulated box outside our back door that milk was delivered to us. That’s telling you how old I am. Keep up the great work!😊

I remember my surprise at seeing that very same type of "silver"(actually galvanized steel) milk box you describe above, at my family's new home in a West Chicago suburb when my father was transferred there in the early 1970's We moved from a brick house in Toronto (where this video was also filmed) and where you can see when Ethan opened the inner "milk door" the entire milkbox is contained completely WITHIN the thick wall of the house! Ours like this home and most every home in the city, was masonry and 11 to 14 inches deep, and roughly a foot wide, and could thusly hold 4 glass 1 gallon milk bottles (later four taller 2 liter milk cartons), above which was a narrow shelf for a carton of a dozen eggs, coffee cream and butter. With both an inside and outside door, our milkboxes also had a more important secondary purpose!! Up to the age of 6 or 7(until I got too big!) it was also a great way for a kid to first wiggle the inner door catch to pop open, to then wriggle through it and get into the house if /when one forgot/lost ones housekey! My surprise at seeing that free standing metal milk box at our new American home, was the realization that , although it was quite a nice house in a relatively affluent area, that the outer frame walls with siding were at the most ONLY a mere 5 inches thick and thusly much too thin to accommodate a milk box, unlike the standard brick & stone walls I was accustomed to, and like the home Ethan is exploring here, that were substantial enough to also keep the milk cold in summer and prevent it from freezing in winter.

Tonight was a 'twofer', and then the first one poofered! 🤭When i saw the grey on the outside, i was doubtful about this one, and i was wrong. The inside was so cute & retro! I like how you can walk in a circle all around the main floor; a great floorplan. Plus it has most of the original details (& the updated stuff light fixtures are cool). My favourite room was the kitchen--holy cow that wallpaper was so pretty! I think the only thing i'd change would be moving the laundry back downstairs so you could put a little banquet where the washer/dryer is sitting. I can even see the basement getting a retro renovation to make it awesome again. You were sad in this one. 💙🥺 Hopefully things are better now, and the sun from the days getting longer is helping to lift your spirits. Thanks so much for sharing this Ethan, and i hope you have a good night! 😊

This is a cool and original retro. The panelled living room is great, these rooms always give me that feeling of home, growing up in the '70's, '80's. The wallpapers, and red carpet also, it was also popular in the '70's, a part of a trend that I believe was like a Spanish, and Mediterranean theme decor. I love little areas like the covered patio, especially like that one, they are like intimate little spaces. The mural was awesome! Another great old home, hate to see it demolished😔 Cool explore!✌️

This house is located in suburban Toronto. I know the neighbourhood and (as a teardown) it would have sold for likely just under 3 million dollars due to the terrific lot size. As you can tell from the huge amount of mail in the foyer, it has been sitting empty for almost two years, primarily because it take that long to get a building permit for the new house they plan to replace this one with, You may have noticed when Ethan pointed out the new "McMansion" over the back fence behind this property that the sheer scale of the new construction is SO much larger than the current one, that it will require a LOT of variances from the current zoning for that neighbourhood. Even for another similar two storey him, since they trend is now to have up to 14 foot high ceilings on the ground floor and 9 foot ceilings in the bedrooms on the second level, that the new build may end up 8 to 11 feet taller, and with the need for three car garages and larger ground floor rooms, they will ask for variances to build closer to the side property lines (often within 2 feet of) then the previous 5 to ten foot limits, and lastly, with a three car garage they need permission to expand to a much wider driveway. And if any of the above requires them to change the grade or remove any trees, then that requires an even longer permit process as the city arborist gets involved along with several other divisions. Finally, as any proposals as I have detailed above are publicly posted in advance, any neighbours who are ot in favour of any aspect of it, will also be heard. These procedures already took 8 to 10 months, but with COVID there is still a huge back log to of approvals to get through. Toronto takes its by-laws and the character of its many neighbourhoods quite seriously and take tree protection even MORE seriously. Hence the preceding may explain WHY most ALL of Ethan's videos show houses in similar condition to this one, where they have been empty for quite some time. Lastly, many folks wonder why he often notes that the power and water are still connected? That's because (in perhaps a third of those new house proposals, the builders NEVER do get the approvals or permits they are seeking from the city, and thusly look for another location, hence the existing house (which is still functional!) with a bit of a clean-up can go back on the market, and often IS bought by someone who DOES want to keep it to live in. (Ethan might want to check which of his featured homes that has happened to, and perhaps with the new owner's permission, re-shoot a video there?)

It's got good bones about it and all it would need to up date the house is paint the wood panelling a light colour to brighten up the room with dark shelves as contrast , the rest of the house just needs rewired , decorated in neutral colours so it doesn't age as much , the basement turned into extra storage with a chest freezer , shelves for seasonal decorations , and emergency non perishable food , a space for the washing machine and tumble dryer as it has access to the garage and the house .The shelves in the garage moved into the basement to save money and racks for tools and bikes installed on the garage walls for a work area for car part maintenance .

What a shame to knock down a very well built home that you could tell it was loved and well taken care of. You can imagine the get togethers especially downstairs. The birthdays, & holidays -- graduation party/anniversarys. Beautiful floors! I'd get rid of all that carpeting - keep the original cabinets- there are ways to 'up- date' without spending tons. Up grade the wireing for sure. The backyard would need alot of work & get rid of the vines but it's a shame to think of the place just destroyed for 'greed' so some 'land developer can make a quick buck! Thank you for the tour.❤
