This INSANE! DoD Pentagon wants to OWN Elon Musk's Starship for the dangerous mission...
Not only is it once again sending astronauts to orbit from American soil but the company has also kicked off the Starship program- a new phase of space tourism and potentially brought the settlement of Mars a step closer to reality, among other accomplishments.
Starship is like a beacon of light that captures the attention of anyone, from spacefaring travelers to NASA aeronautical agency, and notably, the Department of Defense is also not overlooking the potential benefits that Starship could bring to national security.
This has been strongly demonstrated at a recent Space Mobility Conference in Florida, where a senior official from SpaceX announced the DoD's desire to transform Starship into a government-owned asset.
So, what happened?
Why does DoD want to own Starship so much?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Alpha Tech!

Privilage or not, the military protects the US and I hope Elon makes the choice to help develop defenses for the US since much of the systems end up in space. Something like a intercepter shield against nukes that stays classified. I think Elon probably wouldn't like to do offensive builds but defensive should be a no brainer. The US needs someone with Musks expertise and company to help guard us from CCP weapons that are certainly pointed at the US.

Why doesn't the DoD just buy or rent a StarShip of there own ready to use as needed. The US would be follow to continue spending on other companies or purchases related to space. Also, I am curios why the US Pentagon has not already asked Space X and Starlink to send a large number of satellites that can provide the US mikitary with communications that cannot be taken out by one missile, jammed, spoofed, or hacked by adversaries. A system that would provided guarenteed service even in very difficult circumstances.

So much to unpack here. I have a few issues that confuse me. If the DOD uses starship to fly point to point. Will it land on a mechazilla launch pad that's already built at the other end? Ok so that means less flexibility. If it just flies to an airfield somewhere, how do you refuel it to get home, where does the return super heavy booster reside? Also landing a fully loaded starship with cargo. How much dV is required for that landing? Landing an empty SS from orbit might actually be easier than landing a fully loaded SS from a sub orbital flight.

I don't pretend to understand the DoD use case for point to point, but I suspect with Government bucks they're thinking single use delivery anywhere on Earth for emergencies or getting the next Bin Laden. Am I missing something here ? If the DOD fills starship with whatever, food, clothing, weapons. Super heavy puts starship into orbit, then returns to base. Starship flies to wherever the DOD want it. END OF ! There's no fully fuelled super heavy at the drop off point waiting to send starship back into orbit ! There's no refuelling depot to refuel the starship for the return flight ! Durrrrrrrrr !!! How can it fly back and to, doing numerous missions per day ? There's going to be a lot of starships, parked up, on the battle field !

I would assume they will develop drop shipping cargo resupply. Look for example falcon 9 fairing uses a steerable parachute from very high low earth orbit. The ability to to move thousands of pounds of equipment in hours would be the biggest advantage to any military imagine waking up and seeing a fully operational military base outside of your city Also I believe that the military should try to set up a mass drone operation you could easily fly helicopters in with massive drone swarms that could devastate any target within minutes and would reduce the amount of troops on the ground Most of the technology already exists and most drone swarms only take 4 or 5 people to program and set up with starship you could send millions of drones already retro fitted with explosive in hours and can be used within a day of arrival Kinda scary to think about how easy it would be for this to be reality

The DoD can use any company, at any time, to produce the products they find they must have; that is any business, and the business has no choice but to do it. For example, in a factory, they can take it over to produce what it needs. An entire line can be totally dedicated to producing supplies for the military war efforts or for defense purposes. This ranges from electronics to heavy earthmoving equipment, the needs are vast and the desire to have them is endless. Where did you think the military gets it's products; a military factory?

Sounds familiar... Have done writs here on Alpha Tech about these very capabilities. If nothing else its a new level of cheap tech for DOD to leverage... All they have to say is National Security, and things get suddenly very cooperative. The actual genius of it all stems from three things; 1. Simplified and reusable engines. 2. use of fabrication for tanks and hulls. 3. use of stainless steel. Those might be considered platform technologies. And uses not limited to stubby tubular configurations with flappers... In fact it opens up a new frontier in Aircraft potentials, many of which will be hybrids with current military aircraft concepts. And potentially erases the bondary layer between aircraft and space craft. Nor would everything have to include butt launched designs on mega boosters. Its motors man, everything from Space yachts to go carts... I have suggested stealth flying wing flying boat designs. All nicely fabricated shapes using longitudinal gores, and bigger than the Spruce Goose by an order of magnitude. The sky is no longer the limit. could be units designed expressly for one orbit flights or one sub orbit circum navigation flight at altitude of choice. Talking about something that could finally replace the B-52's. and travel so high up, 60,000 ft was considered low altitude. Basically as a Milspec Tech, its a cheap as krapp whatever you want, Bomber, cargo carrier or even a disposable glider troop carrier. All we need now, is for DOD to say those two magic words to FAA, and F&W dept. "National Security, fill out all the forms you want, just dont delay anything ever again, or else." And I'm suspecting the next Administration would consider developing this tech to full potential, to be making America great again.

If SpaceX conveys a vehicle to any other entity, they will have to make all changes to any software licensed under a GPL or GPL-like license public. This includes the Linux kernel and Busybox. It's not clear that they can do this and comply with ITAR restrictions. There are probably ways to handle this with some clever lawyering, but it's not a slam dunk.

First, the DOD station just about everything they need in several different places around the world. They really don't need to use Starship to move equipment from one place to another. The only real reason to use Starship would be to place spy satellites in orbit. But, if they did need to put a hydrogen bomb on an enemy, they have lots of missiles that would do the trick. If they needed to put a 4 star General into a combat area, they can do that by Face-time. So it really comes down to what would the DOD need that is THAT time sensitive? It is possible that the DOD are thinking about cutting back their overseas presents. To move an entire army from Texas to China would take half an hour. The only problem with that idea is that China would shoot down Starship and there goes 100 good men. Any battlefield application would be risky simply because any yahoo with a surface to air missile could do a lot of damage. So it takes me back to what is the best use of Starship? That again would be to put spy satellites and military communication into orbit (and a way to defend them).

@@user-ko1yn8ci6c : Not Starship as of yet but very soon. Yes, Falcon and Falcon Heavy are being used. I'm sure that we don't really know about all of the flights already made and its payload. The only Countries that come close to SpaceX is Russia and China. I don't think Space Force is using them for their missions. I do know that China has stolen all of the plans from SpaceX and are using them for their space programs. Starship will be a game changer when it's finally operational in 3 years. Even the Chinese will not be able to produce what SpaceX will accomplish. Maybe it's just me but I really wanted to keep the military out of space world wide. Too bad that spying is such a lucrative endeavor around the world. Still, Elon Musk will pay for a lunar colony from the money he gets from the Government. After the moon is up and running, he will turn towards Mars and maybe some other venture such as mining asteroid fields. There is a lot of money to be made in space. My guess (and it's probably a good one) is that humans will be living and working all around the solar system in another 100 years.

No the new class of ICBMs is being build by someone else. Starship is strictly a cargo/passenger ship.....for now.

We need to come up with a way for NASA or SpaceX to get up there and start knocking other countries satellites out of orbit.
