I just had a thought about the air pressure in the tires, especially new tires! Another aspect of the new tires is the rigidity of the rubber itself along with the cords. I’m positive that if the old tires worked great between 7 and 9 lbs of air the new ones might only need 4 to 6 lbs until the tires and cords loosen up a bit!

Back then you could buy a decent running 70’sFJ-40 for$ 1,500-$2,500!! if i only had a time machine . Add small block or not , spring over , posi ..lockers. every trip we’d rescue cars, RVs ,and trailers from getting stuck on the beach on our way into camp for the week . Most people could get themselves out by going down to 8lbs . 🤫

@husamabudawoud3258
@husamabudawoud3258 3 ай бұрын
@@Aidan-g4j lower or higer pressure is part of it ; the tire tread aggressiveness is also a factor. Again it's all about pressing down the sand to get that solid grip. Tires that bite into the sand move it from under you while you grind in place. We drive through the desert for a living. Usually I'm happy with a light pickup that has a diesel engine. I put on sand balloons for tiers. Air down is moderate and I make use of a light foot and that lower rpm torque. Makes gliding though sand way easier and consistent. Not talking about Matt here he has his rigs built for it and each serves a well rounded purpose to the letter. The gas engines he uses are stroked torque monsters and make his jeeps light and nimble.

The capacity is good enough for running errands during the week, and I think should be good enough for wheeling to. I mean, on technical trails, we wheel at less than 5mph, and do 15 mph at most between sections. And we are stopped all the time for the group to go through each obstacle. From another rollback operator. EV's for the most part are direct drive. - Motor directly connected to the drive shafts. Dead battery. If you tow these vehicles free wheeling there's a chance of doing damage to the motors. I some cases permanently destroying the electric motors. Even getting the vehicle up onto a rollback can do some damage to the electric motors. Just so as your aware.

So what's the purpose of the neutral gear on EVs? And in the particular chase of the Jeep Wrangler in the video, why you don't shift the transfer case, not the transmission into neutral?
@Ganiscol
@Ganiscol 3 ай бұрын
For the most part, they dont even have a drive shaft but a motor for one or both axles or even per wheel in more rare cases, but thats not really the point that makes a difference. You should put it in towing mode to disengage the motor(s). Most EVs should have such a mode by now. Generally, flatbed is certainly the way to go and that short and slow spinning of the wheels should not cause any damage even with no tow mode engaged. The underlying issue is the regenerative braking that feeds electricity back into the battery and as such causes a resistance, kinda like pulling any vehicle while applying the brakes, thats gonna cause issues over time. In case of an EV, you would be constantly trying to charge the battery while pulling the vehicle for miles and miles which really isnt a good idea, both for the motor(s) and the battery. Yanking that Jeep out of its misery with it helping, was perfectly fine, though.

It's amazing that we don't see many crash recoveries there. In Michigan, at Silver Lake sand dunes recently, a dirt bike was stuffed in a jeep windshield, and people died when a drag racing jeep went out of control and hit spectators.

Silver Lake has such a small ORV area I think it's just vehicles/space ratio that really makes Silver Lake dangerous on the weekends compared to Sand Hollow.
@lbox88
@lbox88 3 ай бұрын
You also gotta figure that Silver lake brings in people from all over the midwest so on perfect weekends it ends up being over-run with people who take it as possibly one of their only chances/weekends to really go full send on their rigs for the year in that type of environment, which makes for poor decision making. Pair that with Sand Hollow State Park being 20k acres where as Silver Lake SP being 3k, you get what @brianv5031 is referencing, way too many people in such a smaller area making way too loose of choices. The drag area is getting a reputation to go to at your own risk esp if they don't have a sanctioned event going on.

6:41 and 7:21 A relliable indicator to know if you need to air down in sand or not is if when you're pushing the car and the wheels begin to bounce, the transfer case shifter even begins to shake in some makes and models. This usually happens more on the front tyres than the rear ones, if the air pressure is way to high, they'll be bouncing like a piston moving up and down in an engine.

This JEEP is a 4XE: no EV, but a PHEV. It has a very small battery which does not add much to the weight and give you a 100% electric range of about 30 miles. In 4x4 these cars have the front wheels driven by the combustion engine, while the rear wheels are driven by electric motors.

@@Doubie. All four wheels working in unison with full lockers is about as good as it gets on any 4X4 so the drive system was not an issue. Just driver experience and tire/pressure choice for driving in hot dry fluffy sand. I'm not a big fan of PHEV since it adds the cost and maintenance of ICE to an EV plus the added complexity of synchronizing two systems however it was not a detractor here as that drive system was working flawlessly and perhaps better than many/most conventional ICE 4X4 systems today which have so many computer protections on them that its hard to overcome the limiters set on them. Matt has often had to overcome those limitations on too many of the newer 4X4's but apparently not on this Jeep PHEV. Best!
