People wanting a grown Matilda assassin movie are losing focus on what this movie was really about. It shines as a standalone and should be left as it is. So many "action" movies milking franchises for money but without substance. This movie is about the sacrifice of a loving protective figure, avenging a child's already lost future and, being a killer, learning how to be a better man.

If you look at the aspect ratio, the film was most likely shot on an anamorphic lens. One of the defining optical characteristics of anamorphic is that the background blur "squeezes" as the lens focuses.

I get wanting a sequel, but the very last moment in this film is Mathilda finally giving the houseplant "roots." Leon taught her, but I'm almost certain he didn't want the life of an assassin for her, and neither does Tony. She planted her own roots at the school to start a new life and to move on. Making her an adult assassin with no stability in her life would have defeated the point of the film.

I generally agree but Natalie Portman is such a great actress that I'd love to see what she could do in a sequel with a really good script --- she'd obviously be a great assassin like Leon, but there would be all kinds of character traits where she both loves and hates the life of killing for money --- she would possibly train an apprentice?

yeah the if any dumb studio in todays hollywood tries to make a sequel it should not be about assassin mathilda but instead normally living mathilda living a happy life like Leon and Tony wanted. and it should not be a action packed movie it should be normal heartwarming drama a short film of sort.

People talk about Anton Chigurh being the most frightening villain, but this guy was even more frightening becaues he was just as crazy and psychotic and violent, but also had crazy henchmen who would kill women and kids without a thought and he actually worked for the government.
@Statsy10
@Statsy10 2 ай бұрын
This guy was more unhinged, without a doubt. Personally, I find Chigurh's cold, calmness to be more frightening though. Of course, on a scale of menacing, Ledger's Joker is tough to beat. Perhaps topped only in my books by Darth Vader.
@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 2 ай бұрын
@@Statsy10 Vader had a boss who was scarier, and as we know, he wasn't totally evil. "All he needed was love". The joker wasn't actually all that frightening. The only reason he killed was to either make a point or serve a purpose. Even Chigurh in the book had a morality, he flipped a coin. EXCEPT when he needed a car. Even somebody like Hannibal lector, who was 'capable' of evil, had a soft spot. What is most frightening about this guy is that he's LITERALLY a creation of the governing establishment and has the entire force of the law on his side. No drug war, no intergalactic war, just the 'status quo' where he has full range to vent his insanity, which of course is what the 'war on drugs' is. This dude killed a KID and never lost sleep over it. But as I've said, in 'films' a character is never just a character but an idea.

It took a couple of times seeing it to realize Leon purposely didn't go straight out through the cops, and went the way he did because he sensed Stansfield would know who he was, and he would lead Stansfield straight to him rather than going after Mathilda. He knew he could get Stansfield alone. He had to know Stansfield was behind him, because he had to have already had his finger through the grenade pin before he was shot to be able to pull it on his way to the ground. He planned all of it in advance to kill Stansfield and himself in a way that would bring closure from the police, and to keep Mathilda safe from anyone coming after her. What really got me thinking about it is the thought that, if he had no clue Stansfield would find him, and getting shot was a total blindside, there is no way he would have had the presence of mind after being surprised with a shot in the head, that it was Stansfield, and that he should pull the grenade pin. He knew all along, lured him in to a trap, and was ready to spring it.
@michaelbaker7499
@michaelbaker7499 3 ай бұрын
Maybe what you're saying is true, but I think it would be better to describe it as a fail safe and that his goal was to escape. He could have his finger through the pin in case he was found. But, assuming he did have his finger through the pin, if he managed to get away, he could have just taken his finger out again and left.

The problem with Gary Oldman is that he is such an absorbing actor that its not until the credits role or someone tells me that I realize that it's Gary Oldman at all. I watched the whole of "immortal beloved" in which he has the lead role, and then when the credits rolled I was like: "Oh - that was Gary Oldman". Personally I think that's great acting - so convincing that you don't even realize its the same guy you've seen dozens of times before.

I think as much praise ought to be given to young Natalie Portman as it rightly is to Jean Reno and Gary Oldman: her performance was absolutely stunning - especially if you're lucky enough to have seen the _uncut_ 'European' version, rather than the tiresomely 'appropriate' one aimed at American audiences (people may draw unhealthy conclusions about the relationship etc etc). THREE acting masterclasses in a single movie - that's some bargain!

while that would be cool in some ways it would also massively undo the whole point of the Leon's sacrifice. He wanted Matilda to have a normal life. Leon would be devastated if she became an assassin like him.

5 - 7 seconds (ish) There is also an audibly click as the primer is hit, and ( yes I know its Hollywood) grenades going off are a nasty flat crack, no billowing flames, just a crack and lots of evil bits of wire whizzing through the air.

There's so much about the ending that I love and hate. The part that's always bothered me was, why wasn't Leon more careful leaving the building? Like, the guy lived in the shadows. Why did he think he could just skip out the building? And, if that was their first encounter, the cop took a big risk killing a guy that could have been anyone else other than Leon.

At first I was like ... that's the longest 5 second delay I've ever seen ... and then I realized that his vest is holding the grenade spoon in place and the 5 second countdown doesn't start until Oldman opens the vest, and then it's exactly 5 seconds.

Okay, so I don't know if I've imagined it, and you guys can help me out here. Back in 94 when The Professional first came out, I watched it in the theatre with some of my friends. Now, you know the ending scene after Mathilda said "I think we'll be okay here, Leon," then "Shape of My Heart" starts to play as they cut to an overhead shot that pans up to the New York skyline, right? I _DISTINCTLY_ remember the scene with this orchestral number, NOT the Sting's song. I've asked around but no one seems to remember or they think I imagined it. But I swear on the graves of all the dead Bond villains, I remember hearing something different, not the Sting's song. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Was there such edit that did NOT have Sting's song? Or am I just batsh*t crazy?

You have a case of Mandela syndrome here ;) Alas, unlike as in other instances of this phenomenon, I myself don't have the same wrong memory here. I watched this movie like 25 times without exaggeration and there was always Shape of My Heart playing during the ending shot (fitting perfectly, but that's another matter).
