Thank you so much for making this video. I started competing in 2017, and there was only one other girl at that competition. I undoubtedly had a fun time at that comp, but I did feel kind of like an outcast. It took a few years to feel truly included in the community. Speaking for myself and many of my friends, FWRs, FNRs, and women’s awards at big championships have been a huge motivator for us to keep improving. It’s a bit confusing how we can get awards for being a women’s champion, but it’s not honored anywhere on our profile.
@SpeedcubenzАй бұрын
Glad to hear that! Yeah seems like an easy fix and an easy win to encourage more women in those early stages. I’ve had a few younger girls come through my cube club, get to a certain level and then bail and I’m not exactly sure why 🤷 Glad to see you’re in the space and making content too, and impressive results too! 🎉🫡

Representation is important for all groups, period. I would also love to see official representation for senior cubers. And as a female senior cuber I'm especially underrepresented :)

hey Mike, thanks so much for making this! i think more content about female speedcubers (like this video) is a step in the right direction to gain more recognition for female speedcubers, and to inspire female beginners to start cubing/competing. was great to see some of the big names in female speedcubing getting recognised! thanks for the mention HAHA

I have been been cubing for 4 years and going to competitions since 2022 and even in the past 2 years ive seen a lot more fellow female competitors. I always make sure to show people that sure cubing is very male dominated hobby but there is also a growing female demographic. A couple of my friends have held UK FNR's and it would be so great to actually show it on their profiles.

I have mixed feelings. Firstly I agree females are underrepresented, many girls are (perhaps rightfully) intimidated about attending competitions because of this. That being said, I do not think that categorizing the world record for male and female is the right way to resolve this. There is no advantage males have over females because of their biology here, these categories are to create a level playing field for fun/fair competition, this already exists in cubing. I actually almost see it as insulting to women, in a condescending way, why give a handicap to those who don't need it? Maybe I am struggling to articulate this, but I would feel incredibly patronized if I was a women, got the female world record, and was then applauded, knowing that if a man got the same times as me it perhaps wouldn't even be noticed. By separating the leader board, we would be robbing women of the opportunity to compete with men, something they are capable of doing in cubing.

Cubing is all about technique
@nuggleiiiАй бұрын
couldn’t this logic be applied to NRs aswell
@a-o-sАй бұрын
@@nuggleiii Yes. I don't see why we care about NR. It just seems weird to me, we are all competing in exactly the same thing, so we should share a leader board.
@perigoncubing28 күн бұрын
whilst i agree that completely removing them from the leaderboard would be very counterproductive, i don't believe that is what people are suggesting be done. instead, having WWR/CR/NRs be more officially recognised and easily displayed for representation is suggested (specific tags on WCA live, ability to display them on profile, profile tab, etc.). I wonder if you would agree more with this system. and on your second point, i have very little doubt that a woman, directly after getting a WWR, would start thinking about men and their times. the whole point of this discussion is to create a distinction between the two rankings, so that way of thinking completely misses the point imo.
@a-o-s28 күн бұрын
@perigoncubing "the whole point of this discussion is to create a distinction between the two rankings" This is what I fundamentally disagree with, I just can't get past why we would separate the rankings for people who are on a level playing field, it makes no sense. For the record I feel the same way about CR or NR. I find it odd to compare yourself to a arbitrary subset of the cubing population. Rather than badges or titles, I think it is a lot cleaner to just have a nicely made filtering system; gender, country, age even, anything. I am not trying to be condescending here; What is the 'argument' behind separating the rankings for male and female edit: and I do not mean applauded as in literally clapping as they get the time, *obviously* they will be happy about it directly after and beyond. I mean it in the sense of being praised/recognized (maybe in the form of a badge). I would *HATE* knowing that other people could achieve the same time as me and it be seen as normal, yet I perform that exact same time and I get badges and what-not just because I were a women, I guess everyone's brains just work differently, but I would really not like that.

@JTiger1046Ай бұрын
its a bit of a stretch and would probably be controversial but being able to see non-binary rankings as well would be great. the first step obviously would be having a visible non-binary or other gender option for wca profiles - obviously not to remove the invisible 'other' setting either, im sure that really benefits many people. i hope one day to be able to sort by non-binary or other rankings in the database and see myself near the top :) also, to the people who have said that gender isnt really a physical advantage like it is in many other sports, sure it may not be, but then neither is nationality, and we still have rankings for everyone representing certain nations, so why should we not have male, female, and non-binary rankings as well?
