You my mate will be dissapointed. I was also looking foward towards getting the 37mm autocannon but its very inaccurate. Unlike the wirb which can spray and hit an enemy aircraft going sideways the ostwind can kill only when the enemy aircraft goes in a headon with it. I even find the 20mm better at longer range sniping then 37mm. Against tanks ost is a little better with more HE filler but thats about it,you will still probably use wirblewind for the AA role.

It really isn't that bad... I think he needs to work on it's aim. The gun will be less peforming in ground attack roles simply because enemy armor is stronger. However, hellcats are easy feed. The HE shells oblitirate aircraft and it doesn't have a reload (basically like the halftrack, 0,7 sec reload and 0,5s between each shell...). The biggest improvement is by far the turret armor. It's slightly sloped 25mm allround which means it's near impenetrable with .50 cal guns whilst the wirbelwind got destroyed by them

Well the wirb has 4 guns and the ostwind only has one, that is why it's much better against aircraft! But the ostwind can kill almost any tank at it's BR from the side, except the KV1. And the best counter to a hellcat is the ostwind ^^

In reality the Wirbelwind performed poorly except in the early war and rarely did enough damage to more modern aircraft. Later in the war, the Wirbelwind was used almost exclusively in an infantry support role against light armored vehicles and infantry. New game mode idea entrenchment team A is stuck in an urban area surrounded by rural areas where team B is. Team B gets unlimited respawns and team a gets limited spawns in order to prevent camping if the capturing team has 3 tanks for every 1 defending tank inside the town the defenders will automatically be forced to surrender or have a timer and when the timer runs out the game ends the teams would play two games who ever holds the city/objective in said city the longest wins this game would be mixed with airforce ground and sea as the game could be played in a port town or have a river going through a city and the boats could gain positions where there team could respawn instead allowing the tanks to get back into battle faster. Couple of things Phly- The HVAP belt murders everything, no need to carry the HEI belt when the sheer mass of bullets from the HVAP (if I did the math right, roughly 4kg of lead per second) is enough to rip any plane to shreds regardless with a hit. And the KV-1, KV-1S and KV-2 (not the KV-1 ZiS-5 or KV-1E/B in my experience) can be murdered at close range if you aim at the turret ring. Just got to stay just mobile enough to avoid their gun barrels while doing so.

Yeah the chassis is a tank chassis but this is a self propelled anti aircraft gun. The tank definition needs to be updated to go by crew size and gun caliber minimum of 37mm.

WhyNot No, self propelled means it can move on it's own. For example you might have a anti tank gun, but it needs a vehicle to tow it around. A self propelled anti tank gun instead has a chassis and engine and can move on it's own

With soviet tanks you can 1 click it, especially if you're a KV-1, the Cromwell is frontally only vulnerable point blank and on turret ring, just don't think you're invincible and you can 1-2 click it, the Shermans are frontally pretty resistant, just dont go point blank and dont show sides, then 1-2 click it

Balázs Mejzer The main problem with the Cromwell is the solid shot and even if you pen it’s hull you probably would not have the reload time to finish it off.The KV is the only exception as phly said it has the armour to resist it but not all tanks are KV’s. A good tank which may be more common may be the British Sherman II with the well angled armour and it American equivalent but there have been times where I couldn’t even pen the wirblewinds hull and you still would need 2 shots minimum to kill it. IMO the ammo belts need a bit of a nerf or try to balance it another way. That’s the same with the 1.0 br vehicles with about the same pen which kills everything. On another note I wonder if Gagin would add the apds shot for the 2 pounders.

I will say one of the Soviet early tier features I miss is the shrapnel shell. Most HE shells don’t have enough explosive mass, but the shrapnel shell on the Soviet tier two 76mm cannon has just enough pen to tear apart a Wirbel or Nashorn without over-penetrating

It would be awesome if they included the Zerstorer-45 Flakpanzer IV/3cm Flakvierling a single example was captured by the western allies at the close of WWII. The Germans had a program of upgrading the 2cm Flak guns with the 3cm 103/38 Flak to better counter the IL-2 & IL-10 with their heavy armor. While numerous examples of the single flak conversions were captured only one example of the quad Flakvierling in the Wirbelwind self-propelled version ever documented. Now that would be a fun premium in the game.

Some info from future for phly....you dont have to switch ammo buddy, keep those AP rounds loaded. Wirbelwind doesnt ask if you are tank or plane, it just kills it...

"Guns" according to the military start at a certain Caliber. For example, Gun will apply to a 20mm or more, but not anything smaller.

I only use HVAP on the wirbelwind. From my experiences, it still works incredibly well for killing planes, and it is easier to aim because of the higher velocity. Also, it can be used to kill other ground vehicles.

Hey Phly, I think it would be really cool if War Thunder added a dynamic war between factions, where players could choose a country at the start and each side would get a set number of planes for the war (i.e. 100 bombers, 150 attackers, and 300 fighters). The war would take place over several real life days, and players who joined the war could log in and join battles at any time. After one team loses all of its planes the war is over. I think this would be a great addition instead of just random battles. Let me know what you think of this idea!

Phly! I said for you to do this a long time ago but take the Wirbelwind to top tier to hunt tank! It is possible, I killed a T64B with one!
