Back in the late 80s and early 90s some of us just used a single rail almost in the center of the board, basically even with the righthand bolts for regular footed or the lefthand bolts for goofy. Give it a shot, you will find with a single fulcrum shifting board position in slides is a lot easier plus you get the weight loss.

For curb skating and ledges deck rails definitely make a lot of sense, i might setup one deck just for that. For flip tricks maybe it makes more sense on hollow trucks.

Keeps things fun and interesting, guess I was similar in the way I had found my personal unicorn setup, but it's just so fun trying different sizes wheelbases and having fun where you didn't expect. I put deck rails on my recent bail gun gary setup and took them off 2 weeks later. After not having them for over 30 years it felt like I was skating with training wheels on and the weight added made it "feel" twice as heavy too. Good on ya for at least giving it a try.

I've road rails the last 5 years and not sure if I could go back at this point. I agree with the long boardslide is the best feeling ever analogy. There was this super long painted slightly downhill block curb in my old neighborhood I wanted to slide so bad. I tried it pre-rails and maybe slide 15 or 20ft before the resistance killed my momentum enough to pull off and land or stop and loose balance. Ordered a set of rails online during the peak of there resurgence out of curiosity since I'm a 90s early 00s guy and that just wasn't a thing back then. Dude I slide the entire block like 50 or 60 ft np very first day after I got my rails. First time I slide long enough to bounce back n forth from front to back baseplate contact like that and just holding one like that hooked me instantly. Not sure if there's enough pros of not having them to take off now.

I run a single Powell rib bone on the heel side of my deck. Mainly to help with board to hurricane. I have noticed though that if I don’t have a rail on my board I find front board bigspins to be less consistent. It must be muscle memory with the weight and slide. I’m sure most people that run rail/rails notice some change to their muscle memory with tricks after the adjustment.
