Well when they founded the houses Slytherine wanted only Pure Blooded students in his house, Grythindor wanted the bravest students, Ravenclaw the most intuitive and studious, and Hufflepuff just accepted any that didnt fall within the other categories.

The second book doesn't provide any evidence that Salazar only wanted purebloods. There are plenty of fan made theories out there that easily debunk that. The founders were a thousand years dead. They left no journals or the such that was mentioned. The only ones that could validate that assumption in the universe would be the Gray Lady and the Bloody Baron. Neither of whom seemed too interested in volunteering stories of the founders. I've seen plenty of theories in which Salazar actually supported muggleborns. And most made sense. The second book has a bunch of children making assumptions. Hardly anything else.

The Shorthand for the houses is Slytherin = Ambition and Greatness, Hufflepuff = Loyalty and Kindness, Ravenclaw = Knowledge and Certainty, Gryffindor = Courage/Bravery and Honor/Valor Slytherin are more the jocks, Hufflepuff are your club members, the ones who get really into the club, Ravenclaw are the nerds who always seem to know everything and Gryffindor are more of the teachers pets/anti-bully kids who rat you out.
