The songwriter for this, Jimmy Webb, was still in high school when he sold songs to Sinatra. This song is a masterpiece, about a man who is stood up at his planned wedding in the park and how he will never ever get over it or the woman who left him there alone. It's heartbreaking, but so creative and imaginative and beautiful to listen to and Sarah's reaction matches all of that. Thank you for honoring my request, Frau Denglar! 💝

Fifty-six years after it was released it isn't any less remarkable that this song was written, orchestrated and produced by someone who was still only twenty-one at the time, namely Jimmy Webb. His other great songs include Wichita Lineman, Up Up And Away and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

This was written in 1967 by the great Jimmy Webb when he was a young man of 21. The music is genius, and the lyrics are mature way beyond his years. I discovered this song when I was in high school, and 50+ years later, it remains my favorite song. This recording was the first release, and it is still the definitive performance of it.

Richard Harris was an Irish actor but with some singing experience. He was the star of Camelot, the Musical and sang that on stage and on film in that. This is the original hit that came out around May/June 1968 and was actually longer than the Beatles Hey Jude by about 19 seconds. Hey Jude came out in Fall 1968. This wa show the song was intended to be, and I hated Donna Summers' disco version. This was much more majestic and magnificent. A masterpiece that was one of 2-3 anthems for the summer of 1968. Jimmy Webb was and is a genius songwriter, he wrote out the entire arrangement himself. He was a trained pianist and organist who wanted to write songs. they include By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Up Up and Away [Grammy winner], Wichita Lineman, Galveston, Are You Still Within the Sound of My Voice, and many many more.

When it came out, the quirkiness intrigued me, and I grew to love it. Richard Harris is an actor, and this song seems like a difficult one to master. BTW, great reaction!

What blows me away Sarah is that you would even consider listening to music from 60 or so years ago. What inspired this? Great music comes from all eras and this song was among the best of its time. It's obvious you love good music. Why not listen to ragtime or tinpan alley songs from early 20th century Americana? Who knows? You might find that fun as well. All the best.

Of course this was recorded long before he played Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies. There is a video on KZbin showing him performing this with an orchestra, trust an actor to move great on stage while performing such a momentous song.

The composer of the song, Jimmy Webb, played the harpsichord part on this. Tis is what happens when REAL human beings make music together. This is really a mini symphony.

Requiem is also written by Jimmy Webb and performed by Richard Harris and just as "big" and striking. Harris had a particularly dramatic singing style, possibly from his work in the theater. It's perfect for certain Webb songs, just as Glen Campbell was perfect for others.

MacArthur Park is an actual park located in downtown Los Angeles. Donna Summer took her cover of "MacArthur Park" to number one in the US charts in 1978. Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, as well as English Bob in Clint Eastwood's 1992 Western classic, Unforgiven.

Sarah, this is the original (1967), and it is incredible. But I think you would also enjoy the late ‘70s/early ‘80s cover by the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer. It really shows off her incredible voice. Period definitely worth a listen or even a reaction.

Richard Harris is also remembered as a great actor . Appeared in Harry Potter films and many others. He also enjoyed a good drinking session with other wild actors, especially Peter O’Toole. Harris was known to on chat shows and be so drunk he couldn’t speak properly. You can’t reconcile the two after listening to this

Richard Harris' version of "MacArthur Park" is the one I remember hearing first in 1968 before Donna Summer covered it as a disco version in 1978. This song was recorded a year after Richard Harris played in the classic movie "Camelot" (1967). He performed several musical numbers in it.
