is convection always associated with severe storms?

Great question - the short answer is no. Convection simply refers to the movement of warm, moist-air parcels in the atmosphere that can lead to a variety of weather events. Some non-storm related examples of convection are the tall puffy cumulus clouds that are in the sky on a summer afternoon. They can lead to storms if other conditions are right, but do not have to. Nonetheless, convection is present. Short answer: Severe storms always indicates convection, but convection by itself does not always indicate severe storms. Thanks!
