They dropped the port (left side) anchor, it dragged some but, when it grabbed it became a pivot point at the bow of the ship causing the ship's aft end to swing to the right. Once a ship is underway with it's engines the tugs backaway and leave. Maybe ships should have been pushed by tugs until past the bridge, hindsight is 20/20.

You would enjoy this video that explains it. It's from a Brit who used to be an engineer on cargo ships like this. He's very sweet and I enjoyed learning more about how these ships work. His plausible theory is that they threw the ship in to hard astern to slow it down. That heavy engine load is what would have caused the thick black smoke, and the rotation of the propellers would have caused the sharp starboard turn. He says that was clearly the wrong decision to make, but that it explains the sequence of events. They can actually. We have a military freightliner unimog with a big Diesel engine that ALWAYS INSTANTLY starts. Even if it has not been ran in months in the dead of winter. ❄ It literally starts in about 1/10th of a second. Not even modern cars and trucks do that.
