I am in Central Texas and when the temperature gets really high I get out my rubber tub, add a little water and then put in a "block" of ice. The girls really seem to appreciate the cold water and they also like to stand in the water to cool off and the alpha will sometimes stand on the ice. It doesn't last too long but it does give the a little break during the heat of the day. Every day I freeze water using a plastic food container about a quart size and this will last for a good while. In exceptionally hot weather I might do this twice a day. I am also considering installing a misting system which will lower the temps by 10 to 15 degrees.

Horsetail (the weed) is a great source of electrolytes and vitamins :) 😀 and is probably growing in your yard 😀. Cutting the plant into small pieces, drying it and grinding it may be the best way to put it in their water, but you could give it to them fresh or chopped too.😊 😊

It's going to be 108 F the next couple of days here in Tucson AZ. I have to hose down my chickens multiple times a day, as I unfortunately don't have misters yet. They don't eat as much, but my troopers are still laying eggs, despite being old ladies. Bless their hearts. They lived in Wyoming their whole lives, they where happier in snow than in heat. South central Texas we already hit 100 for a couple of days. I have trees in the 3 chicken yards but also have shade cloth covering areas around their chicken tractors. We gave them kiddie pools but they prefer the lids from livestock mineral tubs filled with water. I'll add bottles of frozen water so it'll stay cooler longer. Alternate ACV (less in summer) poultry cell, electrolytes & plain water. They have grit, oyster shell, limestone & egg shells available every day. My crews also have solar powered fans & as they're free to roam all day they pretty much get to chose where they wanna hang out during the heat of the day. It's taken 3 yrs to afford all these xtra goodies but I swear they're not as spoiled as I am. 😂

We use prime pine shavings and have little dust and use the hemp nesting box pads. We clean out the hen house every 2 weeks and keep their perch scraped off daily so they don't stand in their own waste when sleeping. Hottest part of the year my chickens lay more eggs. Winter is when they don't lay as much. We have RRRs and Barred Rocks. We give our chickens watermelon, grapes and blueberries to help cool them down. I also put large gallon milk jugs with frozen water and or liter bottles with frozen water and place them in various shaded areas for the chickens in the hottest parts of summer. They will lay next to them if they get to hot to cool down. I also change out their water a few times a day in the mid of the summer so their water doesn't become warm. They like to stand in it for a few mins to cool down as well. Thank you for the information for the electrolytes. I am going to do this. Have a wonderful and Blessed day!

It's cooled back down here in Maine, but we were in the mid to high nineties this week and it was a full time job trying to keep them cool! I may have been overreacting 😂 but, they have very little shade in their run and we are trying to fence in additional shade areas, but it's either super hot or raining! I think I'm going to try the hemp bedding since my coop is really big, but really dusty!! And cobwebby! I've been tossing out oyster shells and giving them cool yogurt and frozen watermelon too. I do crush up their eggshells and put them back in their feed too. I also gave them bowls of water to play in and ice water with electrolytes. The agricultural salt also looks like something I'm going to grab! Thanks so much for this much needed advice!! 🐔🌞😎❄️

Shade, above and beyond ventilation... water water water. Mine free range due to a tree... gotta fix that... Dust will gitcha. Acquired the BF in the mid-eighties cleaning the coop without face covering, oops. It's common in Asia among wranglers... High humidity in the Great Lakes... Let the dust fall where it may... Pine chips work for me, straw not so much. Moving towards wood chips as free for the hauling or even dumping. Family in tree business... Oyster shell good even if not caged... even grit, but free range eat bugs high in calcium. Been trying over the decades additives to special blocks, none now. They get a bucket of preps and leftovers from my pizzeria daily, again calcium and greens. Did have a pet chicken of my daughters pass from heatstroke many years ago... SAD: Thought she was people... set on your knee she did.

I lost 5 last summer in N Texas but August was 110+ every day. I have pans of cool water with frozen bottles of water, solar fans with batteries so one can run while the other charges, big sheets of ice with a few pieces of fruit and vegetables in it, and I installed a mister on a timer. Runs are. Overhead with tarps. Check the temp in the nesting boxes. We ended up drilling vent holes in the roofs of the boxes and aiming a solar attic fan at the nesting boxes to help cool it off and it seemed to help. I just ordered the Redmond agricultural salt.

Very little cooling off during night and then back at it about 9:00 a.m. over 100 again all day. Will make your mixed tonight before I put them to bed I give them watermelon honeydew melon the greens and tomato and carrot salad, Chewy feed, scratch, drink soda bottles frozen solid in the drinking water pans, which a couple of them stand in, kiddie pool what about 2 to 3 inches of water. Will start adding ice to the kiddie pool tomorrow. Intend to hang misters but haven't found them yet. Last year everyone I know had chickens die, are Feed Store lady retired a couple years back and has many chickens and she lost 14 of them in one day! It seems a lot hotter than we're being told. The sun seems a lot brighter the last couple of years and hotter. Some things different. My chicks were born in August and they lay an egg a day and there are nine of them. Should we worry about a floppy comb? We have a chicken whose comb is folded over and covering one eye. It was always slightly folded to one side, which looked fine, but now it's completely in its side. I'm not sure what signs to look for to know if it's a problem or not. I did see you other videos about the health of a comb and it does seem to be a bit pinker with little black dots. She has been bullied for some time and the bullying increased to the point where we had to separate the culprit. Not sure what to look for as far as that floppy comb.

Would misting sprinklers be a good idea too?? In combination with shade, electrolytes. We’ve been thinking about using mist during the peak hour of a heat wave.. with options for them to not be near it unless they want. I find that it helps cool the dirt with evaporation too. I have some really fluffy Orpingtons that struggle the most with heat.

It was 111 the other day here in California. I always go and buy 10 pound ice blocks. Chickens get one in each water container, our coco bunny gets one in his cage which he loves to lay on top off. Of course electrolytes but I’ve noticed that the chickens don’t like the electrolyte water. Might have to try your recipe, they are so darn picky! I did lose one hen the other day, I thought it might be from the heat but last night I noticed a group of my hens were terrorizing another hen. I’ve never had this happen in my flock of 15. I have separated her from the rest but now I feel so bad for her. I just don’t know what to do at this point. I’m waiting a few days then I will reintroduce her to the flock. If it doesn’t go well, she will have to live by herself… not sure how that’s going to work out. Any suggestions?

If it's good quality salt and you make the electrolytes as instructed they will be fine through a heat wave. After that, you can always offer them electrolytes or even just salt water but you need to also offer them fresh, plain water. The quality of the salt really does matter, though! You wouldn't want to do that with table salt.

This is a random question but I really want a "fluffy headed" chicken to add to my flock. I am trying to decide between a silkie or a polish breed and need some pro advice to witch one would be better to get!!! I would really appreciate your advice! :)
