Man.....well thanks for the lesson. I've been putting to much pressure on my dog to heal. This makes more sense. Once a dog masters the place command on different items, my trainer has us bring something with our scent (typically owners clothing) and teaches the dog to place on it. One of her clients pups ran off on a hike so she left her jacket by the trail and found the dog on the jacket the next day!

You may also want to pay attention to see if play first is helping. Some high energy dogs will not be tired out or calmed by the play, but instead just get ramped up. For some dogs, slow, controlled, close healing will calm them more and the play is the reward for training success. Just in case this helps.

Q/ Which is the "break" command - "OK" or "break" or both - and why use 2 words at all? Then later no "OK," just "break".
@thankmelater1254
@thankmelater1254 2 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to figure out a consistent way to give commands. So if I have the dog on "sit" and I want to transition to go to a different spot, would I give "break" to release from sit or just go straight to the next command with no release? If I say "break" then he's on his own until I give the next command, and I might not want him to move on his own when I am about to give a new command of where to go.

Tom, what do you suggest for a dog that used to forge ahead all the time, but now has decided to be an epic dawdler where he's not really sniffing the environment but more just pushing a boundary like an oppositional teenager that's all "oh you want me to walk slower? I'll go sooooo slow because I'm sorta kinda heeling since I'm not pulling"

@@tomdavisofficial I find that so many people want instant results. I have to remind them that they can only teach their dogs as fast as their dogs can learn. I especially like how you return to your dog to release him from "Stay"; I always teach this. I'm going to "steal" your reason why - to reward while they are still "staying". BTW - I also "stole" your "Break" and added it to my list of release words I suggest to my students.

@upstate canine academy I'm curious. Why are you teaching 'stay'? Maybe it's because I train for service work but when I teach down, I expect that to be held until released. Same with sit, place, etc. I do teach wait but reserve that for blind corners or if we're in a situation where there's only enough room for one at a time. Or from time to time I may need to get a dog to stop and remain in palace while walking and await recall. But I feel telling them down stay is telling them down but you only have to hold that if you want to unless I tell you stay. Actual curious question. I'd love to see an answer on this.
