His dad had kidney disease and needed a Transplant, but they couldnt get one, and it was touch and go for a while, but a distant relative heard about it and the song got tested and was a match, so donated a kidney. I've had, and 3 of my siblings have all had Transplants, they all had live doners husband's and wife, but mine was from a dead doner. I can't thank his family enough for what they did for me and others at such a heartbreaking time. The gift of life is such a precious thing.

It's a reversal of the parent/child relationship. It's time for him to look after his father the way he had looked after him when he was a child, folding his clothes, chasing the monsters away. James did this in one take because he wanted the emotions to be raw and real. It was really brave. Thank you for your reaction which was very honest. I think there's something wrong with you if this song doesn't touch you. Apparently everyone on the set was in tears at the end and Mr Blunt Senior said 'why is everyone crying - I'm not dead yet!' (That was his dad in the video.) It was his little pat on the arm at the very end that got me.

It’s a lot. I discovered this song roughly 3 months after my dad passed and I couldn’t stop watching reaction videos because I needed the cathartic tears. It feels like the only time I cried was watching this video and watching people react. I did not follow the people who dry-eyed their way through it because if they couldn’t get this right I didn’t think they could get much of anything right.

A small disagreement - the feeling of the father the son is trying to soothe is not the fear of dying. It is the feeling of a responsible man, a man that for his whole life has managed himself, his family, his work, that without him things could go wrong, those he feels responsible for might suffer. So James tells him, it is all OK, you did your job and you did it well, you prepared us well that we now take over to chase the monsters away. That is even more so as his father was a Major in the British Army, so being responsible for other was really in his blood. And James was Sargent, the line "We're just two grown men" they used when the other was leaving to go into action, where this goodbye could be the last one, too keep them from becoming too emotional. These two have seen people die, had to learn to cope with that "issue". And the feeling of responsibility you see at the very last second, where his dad is patting his crying son's arm. It is still him that does the soothing, even though he was really at the verge of dying from kidney failure (of his remaining kidney, he had donated his other one long before).

You have probably heard Blunt's song "You're Beautiful". It same out over a decade ago and was quite the hit. It gets play on radio stations, and collections of ambient music for stores, restaurants, etc. James generally has touching music, especially of late. This is not even his saddest song. The Girl that Never Was hits me harder. Many people also find that Dark Thought hits them harder.

Great insight into this video. Just watched an unemotional bunch dry eye it through with no reaction to the emotional impact. James Blunt was singing it to his dad a few years ago. One take. Refused to auto tune it to fix the crying. His dad was dying of stage 4 kidney disease. No one in the family was a doner match. A distant cousin in Australia saw the video and checked to see if they were a match and he was able to donate a kidney. James Blunts dad is doing well because of this. 12:44 When the video was made he truly thought his Dad's life was going to be ending.

The great joke that death plays on us is, that no one all over the world will have a problem to be dead! We are all simply afraid of feeling pain. Fear of how painful our own death will be, how painful it is to loose a loved one... Everyone can read this life experience in his father's face and eyes, pls trust him. ty Trevers!

I feel like I had a very similar reaction the first time I heard this song. I didn't even really know what I was listening to, I think I just saw it recommended in a bunch of places. That last verse where he says "I will be the last one, so I'll leave a light on," I always took that to mean that when his father dies, he will be the last to leave the room. I'm not sure if that's obvious or if there's a different interpretation. But I think if I was nearing death, it would mean a lot to me if someone made that kind of a promise to me.

The words we are just two grown men saying goodbye happened, at the beginning, when his father ( who was in the army) said it to James when he enlisted. He did go on to live with a transplant. He sings your beatiful. I really like no bravery. He also sings goodbye my lover.
