I understand your sentiment as regards JP being on the other side of The Pond. One of the really enjoyable aspects of rugby is the respect that players have for the officials plus a good ref often facilitates a great game. On a positive note it should help develop refereeing standards over there and that would be good for the World game.

The Irish Nigel Owens and "part-time coach" is someone who will help with MLR's profile in terms of disciplining and laying down the law like an iron fist. I don't mind if refs like him reduce the players to "school boys" with that constructive criticism on how to improve on the set-pieces and everything else. I'll give it time even if the whistle man is more entertaining than the match itself with the one-liners.

He is one of the best refs in the world, let go for selfish reasons by the UK, glad he has an exciting new gig in the US. A great place for him and his family to spend time. You can see he is being very very patient with the players, because they aren't at the same level he is used to. That number 4 turning away and brought back with a "I haven't dismissed you" in SA, Oz, NZ, UK that would have been a penalty for disrespect. There's a famous line by Lood De Jager, one of the best locks in the world, he's a 6'8" Springbok, he gets called to the ref for a penalty, he looks down at the ref who was probably 5'8" and says "Sorry sir".

Not yet, no. The whole point though is to bring rugby to a wider audience and allow the game to grow. The best country to do it in is one where there is a huge amount of talent for contact sport that is wasted (how many high school football players make it to college football? How many college players never make it pro?). Rugby fans will often sneer at American Football, but a lot of the skills are shared, it's the techniques that need to be taught and refined. MLR has the potential to unlock a big audience for rugby in the US in the same way that MLS has done for football. It's never going to be as big as MLB, NFL etc. but a better US or Canadian national team means better competition for the Tier 1 and 2 nations. Take Japan as an example - they've gone from World Cup group stage whipping boys to beating Tier 1 nations regularly. That comes from a strong grass roots base.
