I'm from the gulf coast but moved away, and haven't seen a blue crab in about 5 years. Thanks. These guys were EVERYWHERE back home, but overfishing made them smaller. I had a really pull on my crab basket and pulled up a dinner plate sized blue crab. I took it home to show it off, then let it go. It was too wide to fit in a 10 gallon bucket. I did not have the heart to hurt it, and let it go. People later told me before everyone overfished, they would often see them that size.

Its probably not the same species of crab, but the same thing happens in a town near where I live. Tons of crab on the beach but they are all small crabs. People keep constantly collecting crabs for free food but since they don't give the crabs time to grow, they are all small.

I wanna make a small clarification for anyone not particularly versed in Biology. The clam doesn’t need to be dead to be pried open like this. Clams are generally really strong but they have a specific weakness: they have muscles which close and open their shells called Adductor Muscles. College Biology courses actually have this as one of their first dissection assignments. You don’t need to be super strong to open a clam, just smart enough to cut the adductor muscles. You can see the crab searching the clam shell for a small opening, and you can see the clam breathing through the valve opening in the side, which the crab shoves its claw into to pry it just slightly open, like jamming a knife into it not just to pry it but also as a wedge while the clam still can clamp shut. Once the crab has its claw in the clam is dead to rights while the crab takes its sweet time having some quick nibbles on the pieces it can pick out. Then the crab really intelligently shoves its other claw in through the wedged opening to cut anything it can, just trying to kill the thing and eat it at the same time like a mantis eating a still living bug. Isn’t nature fucking incredible?

Man, he's smacking his crab lips like crazy. Seems like the little dude might be a tad overstimulated.

I just realized that crabs are the closest thing we have to a super advance robot, just look at the way its built- the joints and sectional parts. Just imagine this thing is made of some kind of metal. Its incredible

Why do you think Japan is so obsessed with Mech anime?

Not really it’s just like any other animal just with an en exoskeleton instead of skeleton. Still flesh and blood on the inside. We have hard parts and joints too just on the inside.

This is why I see a lot of empty shells at the beaches.

Very interesting, I didn't know crabs ate clams that way. No wonder clams like to be buried. I used to live in Central America and once a year the red land crabs come out to mate. The streets get covered, yards are full of crabs, and they eat a lot of stuff. Also the ones that get smashed on the road every night really truly stink later. And the live ones eat the dead. And the locals say they're no good to eat unfortunately. So they're just a pain. But if you could get one or a few in a terrarium or vivarium they should be cool to watch. I didn't mind the random ones we saw during the year but when they came out to mate from the jungle to the Pacific Coast it got crazy. Those crabs are red, purple, and orange all on one animal. On the Caribbean side I saw one land crab with the same shape and size. I don't know if they come out in hords like the Pacific side, I was only there a week.

So they just jimmy their claws in the seam, and slowly go all car jack on it . . . damn, never knew.

the crab looks like a space flying saucer with manipulator levers......and with human emotions at the same time.

What’s interesting to me is how nimble and coordinated the crab is with its claws despite of their size. Lobsters don’t have the same dexterity with their claws.

Really cool! Amazing how perfectly adapted this little guy’s claws are for opening clams! As a human, it’s handy to know that if I’m ever marooned on an island, I can probably get clams open by using a sharp broken shell to wedge the clam open…

Or you could find a pet crab and get it to open your clams for you. You get dinner and some company, and the crab gets all the clams it can eat

I was not expecting the crab to actually use his claws like scissors and just cut the clam open. Thats some insane Power.

Nature is amazing! It is not easy to open up a clam and take out the meat. I've tried to open it. It very tightly closed. You need a knife to crack open. But yes, there's a small soft area at both ends of the clam. It took crab a while to make incision at the end of the clam's mouth. Thanks for the video.
