What a great idea. I've had a lot of trouble growing asparagus in the open garden, because the deer love them. I've already grown them from seed and they're easy, but I'll be growing them in containers from now on - away from the deer.

While living in Germany in the 80s and 90s I lived next to a farmer who grew asparagus that would cover the spears once they broke through the soil. Every morning they would walk down the rows and cover the emerging spears, high and higher until fully grown. When ready they would harvest long thick heavy white spears of asparagus that were amazingly tender. He sold to many of the local Gasthaus. Best I have ever eaten.

In Spain, due to the climate, they usually take less time to grow depending on the region or climate, the processes are accelerated and also in the greenhouse, in my case it is a Mediterranean climate.
@harbin88 Жыл бұрын
So what I get from the video is that you need to cut most of the thin and tall plants out and need always some of them there, preferably in even spaces. Is my understanding right? Thanks!
@GraceDollesin9 ай бұрын
Yes! You need to weed them around springtime especially when it dries up. I’m still waiting for mine to give me harvest. It’s been close to two years. Once they start fruiting they will give you yield for many years. I heard from some people, their asparagus patch is 99 years old. It’s been pass down to them. I’m not much into vegetables gardening. I love perennial flowers. The only vegetable I grow every year is garlic and herbs and my additional , Asparagus. It’s cancer fighting vegetable. Amazing!

@Rattlerjake1 Жыл бұрын
@@lazygardens - First of all, he lives in a country were there is no significant cold weather, like the Philippines, or southern California, or Southeast Asia because his plants are growing all year 'round. Second, he added egg shells for calcium, and later added a time release fertilizer - Asparagus are heavy feeders. When he trims the plants he takes ALL but one mature stem each time - he did this at 4 months, 8 months, and then 12 months - this gave the plants time to produce good root growth. If you harvest for your own use, you should stagger your planting so you have a container to harvest each month, because after harvest you need to let the plant grow so it can produce plenty of shoots at the next pruning.

what do you do with the fine needle like leaves you cut off?? Do you throw them away? Or, wonder if you could dry them and make into a powder to mix with salt/pepper and sprinkle on your food at the table.......maybe a little garlic salt too........now that might be good......I never cut mine off in the garden, so maybe that is why I grow about 5 sprouts a year..........🐸🙃🐸
How long does it take from seeding to harvest ? I grew on the ground, and it has been more than three years, but nothing harvested.
