Dr. Joe, this is some new information. A very low carb diet works great for most diabetics (from the testimonies I have read and watched online). Leafy green vegetables are very low in carbs. Meat, fish, cheece, fat, on the other hand, have zero carbs, and one gets very good blood sugar readings 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3 hours after a meal. We all metabolize differently. I've watched/read about people who have successfully "reversed" their diabetes on high starchy foods like potatoes. Others have achieved the same on meats and foods high in fat. It is complicated. I'll act on this new info and see where it lands me.
@drjoetvMD Жыл бұрын
The low carb diets (ketogenic and carnivore) don't reverse diabetes. They just suppress it. Diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance. If you reverse your diabetes, that means you have reversed your intolerance to carbs. I challenge anyone who claim to have reversed their diabetes on low carb diets to do an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). It's a simple test that lasts 2 hours. Let's see if they pass the test. I guarantee you all of them (100%) of those folks will fail the test. Is that their definition of reversal of diabetes? You are still intolerant of carbohydrate, yet you claim to have reversed diabetes. That's disingenuous at best. They are only having good blood sugar readings because they are avoiding carbs. Period. Not because they can now tolerate carbs. Solution: Dump the fat from your diet, clear your liver cells and muscle cells of the fat in them and start tolerating and enjoying carbs all over again. It is not complicated at all. And guess what? This is safer for your health. You don't have to worry about your kidney health and your heart health. My job here is to help folks see the light. Cut through the hype

But what makes you cells fill up with fat in the first place? I know obese people with horrible diets who are not diabetic.
@drjoetvMD Жыл бұрын
@@ChocolateCityHomeschoolLife The mechanism why some obese people escape diabetes is similar to how not every smoker gets lung cancer or pancreatic cancer or breast cancer. Genes play a role. Some folks are just lucky. They defy the odds. That fats in cells stop the sugar from getting inside the cells is a known fact. And you'll see it for yourself. I have. As you cut down on your fat intake, your tolerance to healthy complex carbs (not refined carbs) gets better every day. But this age-old method is not new. It's not shiny enough. Keto and carnivore are. You make your choices, you take your risks.
@chieduofogu5897 Жыл бұрын
Dr. Joe, this is surprising because I was following the keto diet trend since I stopped taking meds for diabetes. This will take a minute to sink in. Thanks
@drjoetvMD Жыл бұрын
Yes, it will. Keto is the direct opposite of what I am talking about here sadly for you. Keto is NOT a safe diet in the long term. Trust me on this. I did keto years ago. I left...for a reason. Some keto gurus are realizing avoiding carbs is not a safe way to live, hence they are crossing over. And if you want to make your body love carbs again, you have to dump the fat. Carbs and fats just don't go together. Safety first, Chiedu. An initial drop in Hba1c that you see in keto is not everything.

Keto reversed my diabetes. Keto got me off the blood pressure medicine… keto reduced my bad cholesterol. I eat a lot of fat but animal fat or butter… the creams he mentioned are processed…
@drjoetvMD Жыл бұрын
@@cmsa1r Beto, you haven't reversed your diabetes. You have merely suppressed it. You are still carbohydrate intolerant. Reversing diabetes means you can tolerate carbs again. How about you eat an apple and a banana and let me know how your blood sugar behaved. Or better still, go see your doctor and request an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) and he will tell you if you are still diabetic or not. That would be your answer. Suppressing diabetes because you are avoiding carbs doesn't mean you have reversed it. Keto folks should stop using that term.

If I was to reduce the fats that I only introduced within the last two weeks, I would be constantly starving. 😶

Hello Dr. Joe, I am surprised at the inclusion of olive oil on the list of oils to avoid. Olive oil, and particularly extra virgin olive oil, only contains about 2g of saturated fat. It also contains polyphenols, which , along with its well-known anti-inflammatory properties, has been shown to be particularly healthful. By including this oil as something to be avoided, are we throwing the baby out with the bath water?

If you watch subsequent weeks videos, you'll find that's not the case. You will be eating legumes - beans, peas and lentils and we eat starchy carbs too. Don't be afraid of starchy carbs (complex carbs, that is). Your body will deal with them easily once you clear the fat plugging the glucose channels into your body cells

Well if that is the case of glucose entering the cells, then would be wiser to suplement thiamine, thiamine will do this job, it metabolize sugars, fats and proteins. It makes sure the body uses for energy

I think someone has been overselling you the benefits of Thiamine. You can have all the thiamine in the world but if the fat is blocking the glucose channels, the thiamine won't have any substrate to work on

Learn to cook without adding oil and it is very feasible to do that. Adjust your mindset and your recipes. I hardly use oil in my recipes in the last 3 years. I initially was using smaller amounts but I discovered the more oil you take out of your diet, the better your blood sugar response will be. Trust me. It is the most important thing you can do to make yourself eat any healthy carbs you want. You want to come off your diabetic medications safely, do this please and it is better for your heart

So interesting, but oh my goodness! Opposite advice from other MD’s like Dr. Bosworth, Dr. Westman, Dr. Berry and Dr. Chaffee etc. Maybe the plant based diet works without much fat, while the high fat diet works without many carbs!
@drjoetvMD5 ай бұрын
Kris, here is something you should know. The keto or carnivore approach suggested by those doctors you mentioned doesn't cure diabetes. It works by suppressing and hiding the diabetes which is basically insulin resistance because they are avoiding carbs. If you don't eat carbs, of course your blood sugar will be fine but the truth is you are still insulin resistant. You merely hid the problem. So, what do you prefer? Hide the insulin resistance problem knowing it is still there or actually reverse your insulin resistance. They don't tell you this because everyone is hyperfocused on blood sugar readings and so long as the readings are fine as you are avoiding carbs, hurray, they claim the problem is cured. Nope, it isn't. It is a lie and simple logic tells you it is a lie. Get rid of the fat in your liver and muscle cells and enjoy your carbs again whilst having decent blood sugar readings
@krisjustin38845 ай бұрын
@@drjoetvMD Wow! That sounds very logical! But I’m just an untrained commoner who would obviously be impressed with your argument. It’s just that carnivore took away my gout and asthma while I lost weight. Very confusing indeed!! You’re the best I’ve come across on the plant based side and would love to see your ideas debated with these doctors. Non-trained folks shouldn’t have to make life and death decisions like this when trained MD’s disagree among themselves and just ‘preach to the choirs’ on either side. Still, you beat diabetes and that’s a powerful argument! Worth considering!
@krisjustin38845 ай бұрын
@@drjoetvMD I would guess a debate won’t happen, but could I copy/paste what you wrote to me and send it to the comments section of one of these doctor’s channels. You have the best worded, logical argument I’ve seen from your side of the fence and would love to see a response from one of them.

@@krisjustin3884 Well, fine. You may do that but I wrote it for your own understanding and clarity not necessarily to start a war of words which to be honest are usually unproductive. Dr. Joe, I never used much vegetable oils. My whole life I used used a lot of sugar. I didn't ate a lot, I didn't ate much fat, I hardly ate fastfood.. I drink maybe 4 or 5 times a day tea, coffee or cocoa with sugar, maybe two and a half American(big ones) teaspoons full per cup. I started peeing a lot at night that I almost couldn't hold it up. After six months I started to see double at night and then first I thought of diabetes. I then stopped using sugar and started using Stevia, It was very difficult for me. But Stevia is expensive so I bought a cheaper sugarlike thing, but then I start peeing a lot at night again. Since april I stopped using sugar and tonight I put half a teaspoon of brown sugar in my cocoa. I hope and pray that everything in my body is normalized now. Do you think that I got diabetic due to the sugar, because I used a very low amount of fat in my food. When I stopped the sugar I had to eat some more fat, I became very hungry and I ate more than I used to eat. Still I lost 3 kilos weight in two weeks because of the sugar I didn't use anymore.. Do you think that I can use a little bit of sugar now after two and a half month living sugar free. I still eat rice. I am in fact more hungry than when I used sugar.
@drjoetvMD Жыл бұрын
Get yourself tested for diabetes please. Don't guess. It's a simple test. There are other substitutes you can use besides Stevia. See some more here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKLNfKmfi9GjqZI
