One thing I would point out in what made the NFS games great, is the "good" music. And it's not about personal preference or anything like that, but the rap music in Underground added so much to the atmosphere that the player is pulled into. MW 05 had absolutely intense pursuit music, of which changed dynamically to the player and if they were being busted or evading. Carbon was essentially a MW copy, but was weaker due to the weaker music (or the fact you only heard the same 5 songs if you only drove one type of car). Even ProStreet was good in developing an atmosphere through the music and the DJ, but it was the first game since MW to take the series in a new direction so I feel like it suffered because of it. I'll defend that ProStreet was a good game, especially when you revisit it without the MW and U2 expectations. A better semi-arcade sim racer than Shift I think, cause shift took it either too realistic, or not realistic enough. It wasn't realistic enough to enjoy as a sim, but was still too far from arcade. There were a couple decent games in between, but I can't say there's any that I would go back and replay since ProStreet. One thing I will say, though, is that the way they are taking the series now is quite interesting. Heat was relatively fun, and I've yet to play Unbound, but both have a very distinct artistic style and atmosphere to them. Even if it's not quite something I would go for, I can appreciate the effort and the vision they had

The problem is Criterion is putting their Burnout influences in NFS titles (Unbound and Hot Pursuit). Also making the games realistic. It's an arcade game. It isn't meant to be realistic.
