When we first started this journey on KZbin we wanted to create films we love and somehow miss on KZbin. Something new, something more cinematic and something we are proud once the video is out. Big dreams, big boat and our own little big story. Putting out a video that fulfills our own standards is a challenge each and every week. So the schedule is always tight, weeks are stressful and the weekly videos are always dangling on a string. So we’re sorry that you had to wait a bit longer for this video and we can only hope that you see the extra time we put in each and every video to make it „good enough“.

About 20 years ago I bought a 1950’s 50ft tassie (Tasmanian) cray boat which was the first steel cray boat to fish the Tasmanian waters. By the time I bought it it was about 85% steel and 15% rust. I had a lot of fun working on it and to this day it is still floating around somewhere in northern Australia with a new owner. I look at your fantastic videos and it brings back the memories of all the hard work but also the satisfaction restoring a piece of maritime history. We’ll done to you both. Cheers Luke

Hi Luke, I just looked up the taste cray boats and I can absolutely understand why you restored on of those beautiful fishing boats. Since the modern fisheries are so commercialized with huge ships the only choice we have is to restore and preserve old boats because they simply don't make them like this anymore. Overall we're really enjoying the refit project. Not many ships like Flying Coney are still around and right now many old ships from that period are being scraped. On the one hand that's really sad but it means we're really conserving a piece of history and we're probably one of the last people do be able to make a conversion like that.

Use a tie down strap from the deck above with a bungee cord on the grinder as this takes a lot of weight off you but you can still orbit about.😊

Thats a great idea! However the downside is that you end up climbing up and down the ladder all the time to adjust the system. The tercoo made good progress so we had to move the platforms quite often. There are harness solutions with an arm holding the tool. But that's very expensive.

Hello Daniel and Barbara. I love watching you perform this monumental task. I am involved in restoring a steel 158ft WW2 US Navy Landing Craft in Oregon USS LCI713, (a non profit museum ship). We have some You Tube videos if you want to check it out. A few years ago, the LCI713 had almost as much rust as your beautiful ship! Our volunteer restoration crew has been working on this ship since 2004, but in comparison, you two have done more work in 1 year than is humanly possible! You two seem to have so much energy and dedication it is encouraging to see your continuous efforts at restoring Flying Coney. I think we want to try using that rust removal machine (Terco?) that you have, since we have tried several different machines but yours appears to work the best. Anyway try not to get too discouraged you are doing a great job! I cant wait to see how much progress you make every episode. Thank you for making such inspiring videos. I got a chuckle from the little finger toggling the big rudder - which is small compared to the massive ship. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! Don't let the small members with ill will distract you from your course. Perseverance isn't enough, you become more steadfast and build a will of steel. It will serve you both well in future. You aren't just rebuilding a ship, you are building character. You guys are doing a fantastic and through job in fixing the hull. It does look a little bit scary when you ground down all that rust and you can see all those indentation but she was built with a very very thick hull and there is still a lot of the metal left. I love her lines and can understand why you wanted to save her. You both have a final vision of how she will look and sail which many of the people who say scrap her do not have. A vision of a beautiful sail ship that would cost 1/2 million dollars to build brand new. Keep up the good work you both work well together and really support each other. Great teamwork. Each person doing the job that they are most suitable for. Great planning and organization and I liked that you had the hull thickness checked too. With your excellent derusting and coating with zinc primer you should have no further corrosion issue. Lots of zinc anodes would help too. Great job. Keep up the excellent work!

When I first started to take the rust off her stern I was thinking, "well let's see how many holes we'll find." It was a big surprise that it was "just" a lack of maintenance since this spot is so hard to reach. Also the prop was a big relief since this things are really really expensive.

The future is now 🤣 We've shot the intro to next video on deck of floating Flying Coney. The stern of the ship really is hard to reach and if you have the slightest fear of hight it's problematic. Everywhere else you have the boat right in front of you. But at the stern you work under the boat, so the platform is free standing.

I mean you have Leo this incredible craftsman and a trained shipwright and we can only do our research and trust in people we think know more about than we do. I think on this channel it's more about the experience and not too much about the knowledge. We're growing into the project and we're quick learners but I don't know enough to argue with a surveyor. So all I can to is telling you what he told me. But it's okay since it's more about running this ship and on the long run not too much about structural repairs. (Hopefully)

I think it came across too negative in the videos. It was what we felt in that situation. We had no income, didn't know how much we still have to spend and had no possibility to take a few days off... In this kind of mood the seed of doubt fell on very fertile soil. Generally I do enjoy the conversation in the comments and I do think about inputs and considerations people are telling us. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish people who want to help from people who think they just know everything. Usually people who know their stuff also do know that there are different ways to skin a cat. 🐈‍⬛

now your zink anodes look appropriate, they will protect the hull until sandblasting ! Hope you have anodes with some aluminium in them 20% if you stay in brackish water. Your effort of work and attitude will help you through the work, as a little comfort - the work will never end

We have high quality aluminium anodes and they should work both in freshwater and in salt water. We're almost sure now that the previous owner had screwed up the new electric system. We trusted in him since he is a ship engine mechanic. We've disconnected the system now to be save and trying to find a good electrician to verify our assumption.

Quite a few people in the comments know all about the hardships of a project way smaller then this that broke them, physically, mentally and financially. Of all the project boats in the average boat yard ther are 10 failures for every one succes. People that advise you to run are not all coming from hate. Some just want to save you from their own disaster. What you have achieved on this huge vessel is a chance of 1 in 100. Very well done indeed, and heaps of respect! I have a 38ft steel ketch that took me 3 summers working full time in the yard while living onboard. Still not done, from June to September i will be on the hard again.... It never ends.

All the best for your own project! Are you talking about Adam? Wha's left to do? I know that most people here in the comments do want to help. It's not about hate it's more about our own insecurities. Having done a refit yourself you know that there are different approaches. Especially the doubling plates are a hot topic. So you probably can imagine how it feels if you've done your research settled on a proper method and than you've to deal with a bunch of people telling you that what the shipyard has done is wrong. It took us some time to get the knowledge and the self esteem to believe in us and believe in our decisions. It was our decision to work with those people at the yard and they did a great job.

Thanks very very much for sharing. I've watched every episode with a lot of enjoyment. I know it must be difficult sometimes, but please try not to take any notice of the negative comments. Like Daniel quite rightly pointed out. If you've not seen her in the 'flesh'........wel, no need to say anymore. I take my hat of to you both. I wonder when you will realize that you might miss something, I mean the fullfilling and devstating moments and how you get through all the mess, those ups and downs in a row. Maybe once the waves are hitting the hull again and you lay in your cabin no longer fearing that water can get into a leak cause you know that you had done the job right. Thanks! Before we sail on the open ocean we will have the boat hydrojet blasted. For now it's good enough and usually holes don't open up just like that. And what the fisherman of the boat that was taken out in this video told me was: "I don't care if the bilge pump runs from time to time, it's when they don't stop anymore when I get nervous!"
