Smart man to have a float on his checker. Those things sink like a stone. Something that helped me was to cut a thumb grove down the center of the checker with a Dremel. This allows he to maintain control of the fish while measuring. They'll flip when they touch the checker and sometimes I'd drop them. My plyers also have a small piece of pool noodle tied to them. If you're out there enough it'll happen. God is good !
