40mm fans for psus are easily replaced, just make sure you get the right size fans. And dont touch anything else than the fans. They are sometimes soldered directly to the board, cut cables and splice. I currently use noctua 40mm fans in my hp dl360 server psu's.

As a note, resting the dB meter/Phone against the case is probably a bad way of getting measurements - the vibrations from the case will transfer to the phone and make it seem a lot louder. You might want to have it on a tripod, or another table/chair/something not connected to what you're trying to measure.

Warning Noctua is a bad choice for people if they are using real server grade motherboards for a cpu fan. From their own site “Noctua PWM fans feature a minimum speed of 300rpm to allow for ultra quiet operation when your CPU is at idle state and doesn’t require higher cooling performance. Some mainboards display error messages such as “CPU fan error” during the booting process when the fan speed is below a certain level. If you get such error messages using your Noctua PWM fan and if such options are available in your BIOS, please either adjust the minimum fan speed monitoring limit to 200rpm or increase the minimum PWM duty cycle. If your BIOS doesn’t offer these options, please disable CPU fan errors. For detailed information on BIOS fan settings, please consult your mainoard’s manual or contact your mainboard manufacturer.” Problem is most server grade boards won’t let you ignore a CPU fan error automatically. This means you will always be stuck pressing a key to continue at boot. I ran into this problem with my server and had to do some hacks to make it work.

Nice, I recently did a video on replacing the fans in my 100TB server from stock to Noctua and that made a real difference. I made some graphs of all disk temperatures before and after and not only are the Noctua fans quieter (and have a much more pleasant noise profile) at full speed (still much quieter) the disks where also cooler then with the noisy stock fans, so that was a win-win!
@lakorai24 жыл бұрын
Too bad that case doesnt support standard ATX power supplies or even 2u power supplies. Those are way quieter than the 1u units in there.

Ever since I purchased Noctua fans and cpu coolers some 10 years ago, I've never used anything else in my builds. Not only are the fans silent and move a ton of air, they are also pleasant to listen to. Most fans have a really high pitch noise if you listen to it, but Noctua fans have a low pleasant hum. Oh and a 6 year no questions asked warranty.

I just built a 140TB media server and used a 4U compact case, an 850 watt EVGA PSU connected to a 1500 watt UPS for power redundancy rather than a dual PSU, a low profile dual Noctua 140mm cooler(NH-C14S) (2x NF-A14 PWM), and 4x 80mm Noctua fans (NF-A8 PWM) (2 on the backplane and 2 on the back of the case). At idle it is almost inaudible and at full speed they are still quieter than many off the shelf PCs. The ceiling fan makes more noise in my office. Noctua fans are worth every penny!

Silenced a sever case super cheaply by getting rubber backed carpet tiles and siliconing/sikaflex them to the large flat metal panels. They add a lot of mass AND the carpet damps noise at the same time. Only like $5 a tile if that. If they get dusty, just vacuum them haha. Just cut them into shapes that cover whatever flat sheet metal can be covered. My server lid went from being a noisy piece of sheet metal to a solid plate. Hdd noise especially was almost inaudible too except with my head against the intakes. This is of course on top of nice fans. My server uses all Noctua and is inaudible. The only thing I ever hear is the GPU fans when it's transcoding/encoding hard. And that's pretty quiet(gtx 1060)

Jason, you say nothing about the amount of air the Noctua fans can move. Sure they are quieter, but do they still provide the same amount of cooling?
@edwardgreenjr1675 жыл бұрын
Just please please PLEASE make sure the airflow rating on those replacement 40mm PSU fans match similar to the ones you are yanking out. Last thing you need is a overheating 1U PSU in your server rack. If anything, it would be even more of a reason to run all 4 PSUs, regardless of the final build. You'll spread the load across them and they will not have to work as hard/generate as much heat.
@juhanleemetАй бұрын
I have rejected any 1U or 2U servers for that reason: many tiny fans MUST run at a high HOWLING speed to move enough air; My facourite "servers" were Lenovo ThinkStations which ran quiet big fans; recently acquired SuperMicro storage server(s) with 24 or 36 drive capacity, so now I am also on the hunt for quieter fans (and power supplies)

will the noise level be the same if all harddrives are installed? because they restrict the airflow quite a lot! And they vibrate...

@TheGamerX Not necessarily, you can put in all the drives in and don't power them on so you can see if the noise level goes up. on the other hand, if the rest of the sound emitters are louder than harddrives you maybe also don't hear a difference.

I've swapped the 40mm fans in 1U PSUs before. It's easy and relatively safe. Just make sure you only take apart what you need to and you'll be fine.
@lunchie805 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've done PSUs in Pcs and one in a Hikvision NVR. The hardest needed a plug soldered onto the new fan from the old one. Even the PSUs aren't hard, a few screws and just be careful. You can mostly discharge them by unplugging them and then push the on button on the case.

I shocked myself once when I was replacing a psu in a iMac. They are not covered with any protection. It hurt like a bitch but I survived just fine. My take away is be more careful to not touch the other side of the pcb where the caps are soldered. However if someone is really worried about it just get a couple clip wire and attach it to ground with a resitor in the line to discharge.

What kind of volumetric flow rates were you getting with your original fan and what's the volumetric flow rate that you're able to get now with the Noctua fans? I have the same problem with my 2U server which consists of four, half-width blade nodes. My system has four 80x80x38 mm fans which delivers over 170 m^3/h in terms of volumetric flow rate, whereas the Noctua fans can only muster up a max of 55.5 m^3/h, or less than 1/3rd of what I need. Pity. I don't have the space to quadruple stack them because of the half-width, effectively 1U height per node.
@mattscheurman16165 жыл бұрын
I did this with my server as well...although at a higher cost since you know...I'm not sponsored lol. I agree though that the Noctua fans are amazing in regards to their high air flow and lack of noise.

Don't waste your time if you're here looking for a solution to an actual server and not a rack 3U+ aftermarket chassis (usually meant for use with standard ATX boards) w/ regular 120mm fans. I'm not trying to hate, I just don't get the point of this video considering majority of servers are 1-2U and couldn't house a 120 even with modification.

Hey Jason, its Funny you mentioned those power Supply Fans BC I think those are the same 40 x40 mm size in my Netgear 48 Port POE Switch or if not they might be very close, I am told they are 1 U fans and the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 3- pin are the best replacement for mine (to kill sound too & will fit in mine) Noctua also make a thinner version if i remember right of you need it but ask Noctua they might be able to help or know the size and why BE scared , go find a Replacement Power supply in-case you F it up and then take it apart, ive seen what you can do you might need to soldier but i bet you can replace them with the same fans im looking at now from NOctua! this Fan type is very common in all these electronics to dont sweat it man, Im just short on the money due to money hospital bills but there are $20 a piece just to let you know and I need 4 so im gonna hope to get mine B4 the one thats screaming now dies if not it might over heat and that aint gonna happen if push comes to shove! I use the NF-A4x20 FLX in my 10gig switch, they are super quiet but don't move anywhere near as much air as the stock fans, so as long as you are OK with slightly higher temps, or aren't running under high load they work great.

Howdy Gary that's what I will be using in my Net Gear POE switch, it has 4 10 gig sockets & can be Combined at 1 to use just 1 with the Special Adapters to make it a 40 GB , blah blah blah.......the Thing is GARY is that it Only has 2 Exhaust Fans which I have confirmed when I opened it up they are 9000 rpm Beast fans and scream Like the 1 U fans on Jason's New Locke. When I opened up my Switch I saw it had 2 more holes on the end where my fans were now im going to replace with 4 NF-A4x20 Flx fans and on the other Side it has 4 holes Covered with plates for intake Fans im guessing are when/or if it was used in Full 10 Gig beast mode. I would Love for Noctua to Sponsor Me 8 of those Fans BC they are $20 Bucks a Pop from Amazon & im going to put all 8 in BC 10 Gig is Coming sooner than most know BC of the High Tech Demand here in Tampa Bay Now with 100k new homes being built in last 5 yrs or so and out Back Bone is getting Pushed hard and I want to be ready if what Ive been told comes to the for front in 2-3 years...as for the Temps I think it will be lower BC i will have much more air flow going and coming ......im more so wanting the Whine to STOP when they hit 7500k to 8500K Rpms its brutal so im hoping the Noctua fans will stop that even if they only Run at 1800 rpm i think spec sheet said, But as I said ill have 8 so if this is Not enough Air Flow I might just Fabricate A top or Bottom Case plate to allow me to Put either the 200 MM fans or maybe 4 140's on top and 4 140's on the underside , I will just need to move it in my Rack but that's small price to pay to cool it down to almost ambient temp in my Air Conditioned Server Room/Walk in closet side of my Ex wife...lol. It depends on where you are located. IIRC Jason is in Kansas, however I doubt he is for hire. Generally speaking there are several AV / integration companies that would help with your theatre setup, and IT companies that can help with your server setup. Likely you'll find a company that does both!

@btw1115 жыл бұрын
@@shadez7650 No problem. Ultimately it depends on your locale for exactly what set of contractors/companies you want to look for. Here in the Midwest (in the states), there are tons of low voltage contractors that do a widespread similar list of things. (I work in this general field.) Most commonly the AV contractors will be the ones you want to lean towards in your situation, likely leaving you only left with building a server. Make sure you don't overlook building out your structured cabling (ot at least a strong wired network!) It's always easier to run "all of the things" before the sheetrock goes up; then having to figure out how to afterward. I know that if your budget is near Unlimited / very High, a good company to start with might be Bang & Olufsen. They have a division that does "extreme" AV & Network build outs, generally including automation all with the highest end equipment. Not entirely sure how much server work that they do but I do know that they do work worldwide. (Again, they are a top end on cost, but the ideas may possibly point you in the right direction.) Hope this helps.
