Ooh I love this topic and I’m very on board with your premise! Yes exactly, being invested in what’s happening can make even a “slow” book a page turner. Also! I had a realization while watching that I think this is what I try to describe when I’m talking about authors I just click with - one of the things I always find myself talking about with Rosamund Hodge is how she immediately makes me invested in the characters and their relationships, even in very short stories

Yesss, in that sense we're very similar readers! I don't think I know that author? I'll definitely look her up 👀

I'm also a big character person, but what I've discovered is more valuable than a character, is the dynamic between all the twosomes of characters. These in a way, are the real characters. In statistics, it's called "the interaction term".

Very interesting thoughts on characters! I am a plot loving reader myself so characters are not my main focus. That said, I love a well written character as much as anyone and I completely agree with you that I don't like too much of a character analysis. It is necessary to have some so we understand their motives and choices but I hate it when it goes on and on or when the whole book is about it. I much prefer character relations and dialogue. Also, I have observed that books that are mostly about character analysis, usually lack in plot, so all the more reason to dislike them. PS so glad with meet here as well after being acquainted in The Fireside server on Discord.

Thank you for watching and commenting Mike! It's nice to see you over here as well. It's interesting because I love novels with very little plot, but I don't like plotless novels. Especially in literary fiction, I can't think of even one example of a plotless literary novel I've liked.
