Breathing is an extraordinary and mysterious part of life. Unlike so many of our daily choices-whether to eat breakfast or skip it, sweeten our coffee or leave it bitter, take a new job or stay where we are-breathing is not something we consciously decide to do. It happens effortlessly, outside our control, as if it is woven into the very fabric of our being. But here’s the truth: we think we are simply breathing, yet it is not us who breathe. It is God who gives life and sustains every breath for all of us. God is pure love, yet He is also steadfast and faithful to His Word. As it is written: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.” (Matthew 24:35, NIV) This raises profound questions about life. How is it that some young people, full of energy, suddenly face fatal heart attacks, while an elderly person of 85 continues to breathe steadily, year after year, in the same unchanging circumstances? Who or what governs this unseen force that sustains us? In the book of Genesis, it is written: “Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, NLT) This ancient scripture reveals that life itself is a gift-a divine breath imparted by God to humankind. Whether you believe in God or not, the simple reality of breathing points to something beyond our comprehension. Atheists may argue against the existence of a higher power, but even disbelief is, in its way, a form of belief-an acknowledgment of the mystery and the unseen forces shaping life. Breathing is, perhaps, one of the simplest yet most profound miracles of existence. It unites all humanity, from the newborn child taking its first breath to the elderly soul whose life has spanned decades. In the end, breathing reminds us of our shared fragility and the wonder of being alive-sustained not by our own strength, but by the enduring love and power of God.
