You learn real quick here that the NZ sun hits different. Because the Ozone layer is thinner down here, and less pollution in the air, the sun hits hard. Even on cloudy days, you can get sun burnt. Its very harsh, so do slip, slop, slap ( thats from an old NZ ad reminding people to slip on the clothing, slop on the sun screen, and slap on a hat ).

So true! We reapply SPF 50 all day and still got sunburnt. But clearly someone missed a spot - I feel like we could see the finger print there 😅

Yup, NZ 25C in full sun is like 30+ in 'straya, or across the Pacific Islands; turns out the Ozone is kinda handy.

I used to work in aviation and the rule for NZ compared to other similar nations is add +5C to whatever the temp is for the accurate humidity, sun factor and feel. I.e. if it’s 25 it’s actually 30. A 35C day is actually 40, so you have to be so careful with how long you’re in the sun. 20 mins in and 20 mins out without sunscreen is the rule and let’s face it sunscreen is terrible for you

While you're in Wanaka you gotta do the Roy's Peak and Isthmus Peak hikes, such an awesome view over the lakes! Rob Roy glacier is lovely too, a much shorter walk but a bit of a drive to get to

Those bogus temperature reports are not to be believed. The official temp. is taken in a shaded box or something. It' not a true temp. They've been telling me my city "...reached a high of 26 today..." yet I'm looking at my digital weather station that's telling me it's 55 in the direct sunlight and 28.5 in my lounge!

Its not bogus its just that point is to measure the air temperature. Air doesn't heat up from the sun's radiation as much as your skin, or the metal / plastic housing on your weather station will etc so it will always read lower.

@@JimmyKip It is bogus because they're not telling you what you're actually feeling. You're feeling the temperature from the direct sunlight, not the air. That's the temp they should be telling you.
