The HD cam on the plane was a Mobius Action Cam amzn.to/2nxTSR7
But I also recommend this newer more rugged one www.gearbest.co...
Or amazon amzn.to/2odcHMw
So I made a centrifugal fan.. And then built an airplane around it
Bonus footage: • Video
For clarification: I did not use the AC motor from the heater, but rather I put the impeller onto a much more powerful BLDC motor as commonly used in RC.

It's genius.

David M. Johnston There's a plenty flight controllers with 6 axis gyro inside (plus barometer, compass, gps,...) available today and you can use them with planes, quadrocopters, helicopters,... Could you, by mounting the fan horizontally with the air intake at the top (with the right design) lower the air pressure on top of the craft and increase the lift? Like some kind of sucking flaps on the leading edge. Also wonder if something like it (smaller?) could be used on the main shaft of a heli with the ducted thrust used to replace the tail rotor.

Both your ideas would work, and have been used in aircraft designs several times. The MD NOTAR System works a lot like that for lateral control (The actual torque compensation doesn't, though, only the rudder does.) and some STOL capable transport aircraft have their engines on their wings for that reason. Or think of the Honda Jet, or from back then, the VFW 614.

' first ' Realize similar has been done and thought of for ages. Reaction force of blown air is obvious to anyone who has ever used a gas backpack leaf blower, and equally obvious that it's terribly inefficient but that you could use it to power a plane if you did it well. Actually doing it is only a triviality, it was obvious from the moment of first using that type of leaf blower in the 80s. You're about 10 times better off to simply use the same motor/engine but put an actual prop on it..

The greatest advantage of this would be for safety. One of the biggest draw backs of rc aeroplaning would be safety especially when it comes to youngsters with little fingers getting into the propellers. This idea has the potential to change lives. Imagine a scenario of a sheer cliff rescue. With a copter, the pilot has to worry about rotor contact with the cliff face; where as a rotor less craft avoids this issue.

@lordhood117
@lordhood117 7 жыл бұрын
dafrandle Power requirements can be reduced with careful engineering. For example, giving the exhaust a properly-focused nozzle would create a Venturi effect, boosting the thrust output a bit thanks to Bernoulli's Principle.
@dafrandle
@dafrandle 7 жыл бұрын
(i should note i'm talking about the helicopter part) to get the same performance it would most likely require at least a little more power because we trade the usage of lifting surfaces (the rotors) for thrust that we must create all ourselves, it can be done (just look at the harrier) it just not practical -- or we would have adopted it already

Awesome work. Question about the Giro you used on the helicopter. I have no experience with this stuff so excuse the ignorance. It is physically stuck to the plane and just dampens its movements making it smoother? or somehow just reading the movements and building into the servos for controlling it?
@SammSheperd
@SammSheperd 8 жыл бұрын
+Lo3 Yea, it is a sensor that senses rotation. When the plane is rotated, it automatically applies corrective action on the appropriate control surfaces (assuming you set it up correctly). The unit also lets pilot control inputs through. This instantaneous reaction helps to smoothen things out

If you were wondering about the other parts that I cannot say, if you want to build planes out of this foam look around there are many channels that teach you how to build and fly them. the first one that comes to mind is FlightTest. just search around and if you do make some planes enjoy flying them. pls correct me if i was wrong with any info.

That space in the blower is called a plenum. If you look that up you can dial in the most efficient shape, although you got pretty close it looks like. Squirl fans are very effient as fans go. Lot of advantages for not having a prop. Very durable and more placement options for the propulsion.
@fabiovezzari2895

I read that centrifugal fans on planes are efficient and powerful at low speeds, but also that they consume more energy from the batteries. Do you think it's true? I knew it from a guy on a forum and probably they are just intuitive considerations.
@bradyspace
@bradyspace 6 жыл бұрын
The statements seem conflicting. It seems like there are tradeoffs like many other plane configurations. There are more blades and more surface area around the walls of these blowers vs a prop that is getting clean open air. However the blower with enclosed air can be compressed and further utilized. Similiarly at certain speeds jets become more efficient than props.

Well played sir, that is pretty ingenious. As with EDF's there are a few critical tolerances with regards to inlet and outlet size (and in your case impeller to case clearances), with some study, expirementation and refinement, I'm confident you could significantly increase the efficiency. Also the reason for pitch up under power is the thrust line(outlet) below the center of lift and gravity. If you flip your outlet to the top it would move them closet to one another and provide moving air across your tail surfaces.Keep up the innovating, now if you'll excuse me I must go strip the a/c blower out of my old car...

The ram air intake needs to be more stream lined. I looked at this video a few times and taking screenshots of the ram air intake to get an idea of its size. It's huge lol !!! Crunching the numbers show the intake is way way to big and actually air is backed up. You need to streamline the intake duck and make it more like an oval shape instead of a scoop which is causing drag.

I would change a few things. Your wing incidence ratio is way off. Make it closer to the tail AoA. Your ability to make exhaust velocity is not being taken advantage of. You need to narrow the outlet which would raise the air speed coming out of the exhaust. Treat it just like an EDF. Widen the exhaust outlet and you increase traction but decrease speed. Narrow the outlet and you decrease traction and increase speed.
@SammSheperd
@SammSheperd 8 жыл бұрын
+MikeSVOR I agree with you. The angle of incidence is a bit high, resulting in a little bit of a nose low cruising attitude. The decalage is also a bit high, resulting in an inherently stable, but slow trimmed condition and excess elevator drag at higher speeds. When I experimented with narrowing the discharge nozzle, I found that it was not able to pump as much air, and would not consume as much power. Though I did not try to measure the thrust in this condition, it felt to me like there was less. I am interested in asking engineering professors at my school when I get back about what centrifugal pump design would be best for thrust. And I would like to model and 3D print a much more complex one which I imagine will resemble something like a turbocharger.
