I was at age of 17 staying in Phanat Nikhom refugee camp with my dear mother and two younger brother and sister for about two weeks during my ODP from Saigon to Houston, TX our final destination way back in early March 1984. I remembered riding in a bus early evening with small fans, lights and colorful curtains inside from Bangkok International airport to the camp for about two hours. The street lights in Bangkok were yellow unlike white in Saigon because of the American style. I really love them, cozy and warm look instead of the cool white. Anyway image escaping, ok leaving from Saigon (the most modern city in Vn) back then and arrived in Bangkok, wow just like heaven to me! So modern then BUT comparing it to these days . However those yellow streetlights and the flashy looking buses with long haired (hippie) drivers in tank top T shirts cannot be forgotten!

The modernisation of Bangkok has notified its charm, making it a city no more different from any modernised western cities, in the process washing its own cultural significance and identity. I have been traveling to Bangkok for holiday the last three decades. And noticed the dilution of its charm and energy gradually over time. To me that is not progressive but regressive, as most visitors visit to experience Thai culture just to find that they have not left their own modern city. The evolution of Bangkok city brings only lameness to the Thai culture. It’s sad.
