Having built 3 cedar strip kayaks that are well used, I recommend adding something more durable to the bottom of the skeg and the bow. I have reglassed these areas multiple times due to abrasion from beaching the boats. A brass strip is a good addition and will save you work down the road.
@martinbruckner21098 ай бұрын
Some folks seem to put an epoxy layer with graphite powder mixed in onto the bottom as an abrasion resistant layer. On my own stitch&glue kayak I just have 2 layers of 6 ounce glass and some varnish, but I always lift it out of the water (only 40 pounds empty weight). I think the gunnels need protection by extra rub rails if you want to use concrete dinghy docks. I don't worry about the off center dagger board. I have sailed a kayak with a dagger board on the left gunnel and it worked on both tacks. It should have a decent cross section and enough aspect ratio though so it generates good lift and not too much drag.

That’s so interesting that the dagger board is off-center. I guess that helps to give lots of space for feet and stuff and butts in the middle or while rowing. It reminds me of the Naples Sabots where you strategically planned what tack the lee board would be on, cause that tack you’re mostly going sideways.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a daggerboard trunk that wasn’t on the centerline of the boat. Curious as to how that will affect the handling of the boat under sail.
@carlstineman2748 ай бұрын
Why offset the dagger board to starboard? Maybe simplify the construction a bit but it seems that the box could be installed on centerline almost as easily. Planning to sail mostly on port tack?

Think the point is to maximise the space. This is going to be a tender as well as a nippy little sailor too after all. And it's not so far of centre to be a huge issue I'm sure. But I guess we will see soon enough the speed they are coming together!

Great camera work again Yani, especially as you are in the last trimester! So close now! ❤The dinghy is looking really good, great idea with the battons. Mat I just got one question this week, when the rudder and dagger boards are being laid up supported in the vice, how do you go about glassing and overlapping the lamination on the portion obscured by the vice jaws? You guys must be so busy so if you have no time or need to take time to answer I totally understand. God bless all three of you ❤ oh and btw i think your choice of white on white is spot on with pairing it to Duracell 👍

I'm curious Matt. You did vacuum bagging on the deck and skeg (both made out of foam), but not the plywood sections. And you didn't vacuum bag the dagger board (made out of foam). Why vacuum bag some foam boards and not others? And would there have been any benefit from vacuum bagging the plywood sections? Is there something about foam core that makes vacuum bagging important? Any strength benefit to vacuum bagging the whole project? I know time is an issue during the class. If you were building this in your garage would you have bagged the whole thing? Loved the batten edge on the skeg. Tough and durable. Perfect solution. I'd be tempted to continue that strip along the whole keel up to the bow. What a great group, the teamwork is great to see and must make the whole project that much more enjoyable, well done! Loved the inspection! And what a trooper filming all of this while 8 months pregnant! Yanni you're a warrior!
@TheDuracellProject8 ай бұрын
It's a good question. We would have preferred to vacuum bag the dagger board, but it would have taken more time than we had available for the class. Same for the plywood! It's not necessary to vacuum bag anything for the dinghy. We did the decks because we had the time (they were installed later in the build) and the daggerboard and rudder...we talked about vacuum bagging, but it would have been too complicated and time consuming for the class.

I am sure your dingy is already done and at your house. I wanted to make a suggestion. Just heat up some spare plastic and melt it into the spot, smooth, repair more if needed.

Nice project. If you keep the name of the boat, Duracell, then you should name the dinghy, AAA .
@JamesAyton-qu8fo8 ай бұрын
@robpattison Vac bagging is great. It keeps the strength up and the weight down. When you are doing small build runs its not cost or time effective to make up precision moulds to vac into so its done on a flat prepped table. If you have an item like a dagger board or a rudder you want them to be symmetrically the same on both sides so they cut the water evenly. If you vaced a dagger baord down on a flat surface it would try to pull it falt for one thing and loose its symmetry. You would also i guess get pooling of resin around and under any spaces where the vacume couldn't pull it fully flat. Maybe you could do it in a mould but i think you would end up with one mirror finish side facing the mould and the opposite showing the weave. Ive only done somthing similar with pre imprgnated glass that it cured using an autoclave so maybe if it was a wet layup with peelply over the top you would get both sides pretty even. The mould and the foam and glass layup though would have to be absolutely spot on othewise you would be baxk to loosing symmetry and have to spend time and effort fairing it by hand to get it as best you could. All with the cost of the mould and the time on top. If you listen in the video the boat builder states that he is glassing bothe sides at the same time with the piece vertical so that all the contracting of the glass and resin during curing happens everywhere at the same time. This keeps warping to a bare minimum or hopefully negates it all together.
