This Is One Reason Pawn Shops Get A Bad Name

This week we definitely have some interesting characters come through the doors. First, a lady comes in with some silver coins to sell and she doesn't like my offer at all. Next, another lady comes in with some collectables and she is surprised and seems insulted when I tell her they aren't worth much at all. Lastly, a guy comes in with a huge 18k bracelet and we try to make a deal. While making the deal I will explain to you one reason I think pawn shops get a bad name. Your father made a good point which I will always remember. If you don't see what you want at a yard sale, let the homeowner know what you are there for. They may not have that kinda stuff out for sale and may still want to sell it. That ring was a perfect example and he wouldn't have gotten it if he didn't ask. Great score. !! 😂

If someone came to you with something worth 3k and only wanted 1.5, you'd give them what? 2,800 and make 200?! 🤔 Obv it sounds fair to offer 2.5k but he's still getting more than he wanted and matey is taking the risk, stolen or reselling difficulties.... 2k doesn't sound bad to me when he asked for 1.5. Matey could have gave him the 1.5 and he would have been a happy customer, it's partly on the seller to do research and being offered another 500 is quite generous when don't have to.

Those stores didn't last long, probably because between the ebay selling fees, then the fee that the store you brought it too, then the sales tax you paid you'd walk away with $20 on an item that sold for $100. I think most people realized they could bring it to their local pawn shop and get more for it than that.

3 Reasons I see that Pawn Shops get a bad name are: Customers that don't know values, and employees that don't know values. I have seen so many people arguing that their items are worth more and then think the shop is trying to scam them. At the same time, I have seen shop owners that have no clue on items, the old owner of the shop in my town would turn down retro videogames and tools, but buy stuff like home furnishings and unverified signed records. He would always come up with values in his head instead of looking online. I once got a PS3 Slim the week after release for $100 and he threw in a stack of Blu-rays and games. The last reason Pawn Shops look bad is Owners that just screw people over on purpose. I was at one shop to buy some retro games, and the owner told me that he quit selling them in store because he got faster sales online. He also bragged that by only selling the sports/cheap titles in store, he could pay 50 cents a piece and customers would have no clue that he was giving them $0.50 for games worth over $100. This was around 2017, and he said that he was advertising on Facebook that he bought NES/SNES lots, and was getting multiple $100+ games in per week.

You are 100% correct. I am in a state where the buyer/pawn broker is just out of the money. If they want the money back they have to take the thief to small claims court and get a judgment, and we all know how much civil judgments are worth... After a buyer/pawn broker loses so much money in recoveries, they enter a self-survival mode. PS: Gameboy games... they have started faking the number stamps too! Keep an eye out!
